The CrossCat4U: Adaptive Education to Cross Categorical Emphasis Licensure Program is for UWW alumni who completed a BSE with an adaptive education program. The program builds on the Adaptive Education License requirements to prepare elementary and secondary teachers to also teach students with disabilities within special education. Courses are asynchronous to meet the varied schedules of working professionals.


The CrossCat4U: Adaptive Education to Cross Categorical Emphasis is a 21-credit licensure program. This fully online program can be started any term and at a pace that works best for you. Full-time students can finish in as little as a year and a half.

It is s developed to meet all the knowledge, skills, and practices of required by the Department of Public Instruction for teachers working with the continuum of special education developmental levels including:

  • Intensive Reading Interventions
  • Eligibility Assessment and Identification
  • Special Education Law and Legal Issues
  • Functional Behavior Assessment
  • Behavioral Interventions
  • Curriculum & Methods for Severe Disabilities

Coursework for CrossCat4U: Adaptive Education to Cross Categorical Emphasis Licensure program:

  • SPECED 640 Advanced Behavior (3 credits)
  • SPECED 662 Assessment (3 credits)
  • SPECED 700 Law (3 credits)
  • SPECED 752 Science of Reading I (3 credits)
  • SPECED 754 Science of Reading 2 (or READING 360, READING 461, & READING 462 as undergrad) (3 credits)
  • SPECED 776 C/M Multiple Disabilities (3 credits)
  • SPECED 793 or 789 Practicum/In-service Practicum (3 credits)

To ensure a high quality graduate student group, students must have a BSE degree from UW-Whitewater that includes an adaptive education program,  and meet graduate admission criteria.

If you do not meet the graduate admission criteria, please  email us to determine if you could be admitted on a conditional basis.

International students must meet additional criteria and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.  Contact us for information and assistance.
