2024 HERI Faculty Survey
As part of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's continued efforts to better understand and support our campus community, Chancellor Corey King asked the Chancellor's Committee on Inclusive Excellence to administer two surveys to UW-Whitewater employees in Spring 2024. Faculty and instructional staff were invited to share their experiences through the HERI Faculty Survey.
Developed by the Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) out of the University of California – Los Angeles (UCLA), the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) Faculty Survey has been designed to provide institutions with information pertaining to the faculty experience. According to the HERI website: “[The survey] includes topics such as pedagogical practices, faculty goals and expectations for students, research and service activities, sources of stress and satisfaction, and the connection between learning in the classroom and practices in the local and global community.” HERI provides participant institutions with comprehensive information about the faculty experience at their institutions. This information can be used to identify and address issues that may contribute to student success.
Faculty and instructional staff who were employed in instructional positions on either campus in the Fall 2023 semester at UW-Whitewater received a personalized invitation to participate in the survey on 16 January 2024. The survey, which took approximately 25 - 30 minutes to complete, was comprised of a core set of ~35 substantive questions, an additional subset of 4 questions on campus climate, and a set of 5 questions developed by the Chancellor's Committee on Inclusive Excellence specifically on the UW-Whitewater experience. The survey was open until 12 February 2024.
Participation in this survey was completely voluntary. Data collected by CIRP was reported to UW-Whitewater administration in the aggregate. For specific information on how participants were treated, please read the HERI Faculty Survey Informed Consent Agreement.
In order to encourage participation in this important survey, UW-Whitewater provided incentives for employees who chose to complete the survey. Those who completed the survey were entered into a lottery to be selected at random to receive one of several incentives. These included ipads, campus parking passes, and lunch with Chancellor King.
The results of the survey are summarized in this slide deck: HERI Faculty Survey Results Overview PowerPoint Presentation
