Students enrolled in the UW-Whitewater's ECE program are involved in fieldwork or directed teaching throughout their training. Students in this program will benefit from nine different placements over the six semesters of the program. The placement opportunities in this program will include working with children in head start, infants and toddlers in a group setting and in natural settings, working with preschool age and K4/K5 children including at least one inclusive classroom, and working with children in grades 1-3 (in both regular and special education or in a fully integrated classroom).
Three semesters include a reflective seminar along with coursework and/or fieldwork, which provide students with opportunities to discuss their work in the field and to develop portfolios for demonstrating their development. The students in the Early Childhood Education Program develop three electronic portfolios. The faculty assists the students during their classes and during three seminars in developing high quality portfolios, which reflect a strong knowledge base and understanding of pertinent professional knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
