Group Fitness and Cycling

At Recreation Sports, we offer a number of group fitness classes. These classes are a great way to reach your fitness goals with others. We have numerous options so you're certain to find a class that's right for you.

Class Descriptions

Barbell Strength

Focuses on building full body strength through the use of barbells and plates.

Below the Belt

This 30 minute class follows the format of Group Strength but targets the lower body. It is designed to tone and tighten everything below the belt!

CORE 360

 This FREE 15 minute abs class is open to everyone. A fun and challenging way to target your core 360 degrees through integrated functional exercises.

Cycling

Come and get the workout of your life! This class is designed to push you to the limit of your cardiovascular fitness. Low-impact, but high intensity! Water bottles are required. Located in the University Fitness Center, basement of Wells Hall. Reservations are highly recommended. (60 minute format)

Group Strength + CORE 360

Mash-up of group strength and CORE 360, format will vary.

Group Strength

A muscular-conditioning workout that uses free weights, bands and other equipment to improve your overall muscular strength and fitness levels.

Insanity (R)

A fun-filled, action packed cardio based, total-body conditioning workout that provides a wide range of modifications for all levels of fitness. (30 minute format)

P90X (R)

Total-body strength and cardio-conditioning workouts inspiring group camaraderie to help people achieve their desired fitness levels. (45 minute format).

Total Suspension

TRX Suspension system leverages gravity and bodyweight, activating your core to help strengthen and increase range of motion throughout your body mixed with a cardio conditioning workout.

*User's hands and feet are supported by a single anchor point while the opposite end of the body is in contact with the floor. (45 minute format)

Step

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced stepper, this tried and true fitness staple uses basic to advanced step moves to challenge all levels of participants. (45 minute format)

Suspension Training

TRX Suspension training leverages gravity and bodyweight, activating your core to help strengthen and increase range of motion throughout your body.

Suspension Training + Yoga

Mash-up of Suspension Training and Yoga, format will vary from week to week.

Yoga

Connect your mind and body while promoting muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility. "Lengthening while strengthening!" Namaste! (45 or 60 minute format, Yoga+is a 75 minute format)

What to Expect

Wondering what your fitness experience will be like? We've got answers so you can show up knowing what to expect and ready to get going!

  • No one is permitted to workout when the facility is closed and/or without staff present.

Eligible passes to access group fitness and cycling classes are: Fitness Membership, Group Fitness and Cycling Pass, Gold Community Membership, Monthly Community Pass or daily guest pass. Age restrictions apply. 

  • Flex Friday: Classes and Instructors will rotate weekly and be taught Fridays 11 am - 1:30 pm, class dependent.
  • Flex Friday schedule begins on Friday, January 31st. See Flex Friday schedule for details.
  • Spring Break: No classes March 21st- 28th
  • Exam week schedule will be posted if applicable
  • Group Fitness and Cycling schedules are subject to change at anytime, see the Rec Sports app for the most up to date schedule.
  • All classes are available for reservation through the Rec Sports app under "group fitness."
  • Classes are available up to 7 days in advance, space is limited and varies by class.
  • No shows are subject to penalty. Remove yourself from the class as needed prior to the class beginning.
  • Arrive at least five minutes early to get set up for the class to begin on time.
  • Cycling classes open up 15 minutes before class time for bike set-up. Bikes must be claimed five minutes before the class begins or the bike will be given away.
  • Late entry will not be permitted to any class.
  • No exit/re-entry permitted.
  • Shoes required unless it is a mind body class (yoga)
  • Shirts must coverfull torso, backless shirts below the shoulder blades are not permitted. Shorts/pants should be free of belts, studs, rivets and zippers.
  • All Cycling classes require members to bring water to each class.
  • At the end of class, please clean and put away your equipment and exit the studio in a timely manner so the next class can start on time.
  • Taking photos and video during class is strictly prohibited.

Learn how to teach group fitness and cycling classes through a comprehensive training series! Rec Sports hires instructors each semester through a multiple-interview process. Whether you are inexperienced or are already an instructor and would like to teach for RecSports, we have the opportunity for you.

Policies and Terms

  • Arrive to class 15 minutes early, a staff member will check you in on-site.
  • Have your Hawk Card/Membership ID ready to scan on-site to confirm membership.
  • All registered members must be checked into the class location five (5) minutes PRIOR to class, otherwise the reservation will be forfeited.
  • Drop-in reservations are allowed for any member as long as space allows.
  • Membership/Guest Pass required (Fitness Membership, Gold Community Membership, Group Fitness only pass or day pass), age restrictions apply.
  • Members and guests are not permitted use group fitness and cycling equipment when class is not officially in session.
  • Dress Code:
    • Shirts must cover the FULL torso. Backless shirts below the shoulder blades are not permitted.
    • Shorts/pants free of belts, studs, rivets and uncovered zippers.
    • Shoes that are closed-toe/heel, covering the entire foot.
  • Class reservations are available through the Rec Sports App seven days in advance of the class.
  • Limited spots available for each class and location; details for each class will be listed under each reservation.
    • There is a registration limit of two (2) classes per day.
  • If the class is virtual, links will be provided.
  • For your own safety, as well as being considerate of other members where space is limited, back-to-back class participation is limited to only two (2) classes
  • Most classes will be held in the Williams Center Dance Studio. When weather permits, outdoor locations include the Wangerin Outdoor Tennis Courts and the outdoor basketball court on the south side of the Williams Center. Locations will be listed on the schedule in the Rec Sports App.
  • Cycling classes are held in University Fitness, in the basement of Wells Hall:
    • Water bottle is required, towel is encouraged
    • Cycling doors open no earlier than 15 minutes prior to the class starting
    • Saving bikes is prohibited
  • Aqua classes (when offered) are held in the Williams Center Pool.
  • Classes will be canceled within ten (10) minutes if no participants show-up to take the class.
