BIPOC Women in Sustainability Display

April 16 - May 15

University Center - Roberta's Art Gallery

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women have been an important part in the advancement of sustainability and climate justice by highlighting how environmental harm is shaped by race, ethnicity, gender, and systemic inequality. Communities of color are more likely to be put in situations where they endure pollution, climate-related health risks, and environmental hazards because of historical patterns from discrimination in housing, labor, and land use. BIPOC women have led advocacy efforts that redefine environmentalism as a matter of social justice and human rights.

With efforts through grassroots organizing, labor activism, indigenous leadership, and policy advocacy, they have been able to emphasize that sustainability must prioritize public health, cultural survival, and community well-being. The intersectional approach that they take has its challenges in traditional climate solutions by insisting that effective and equitable climate action must concern structural racism and gender inequality with environmental protection.
