INTERNSHIPS AND INVOLVEMENT

Are you interested in a career in healthcare, counseling, or a helping profession? UHCS offers opportunities to get involved as an intern with our experienced team.

This course provides students with hands-on experience in a healthcare setting, including front desk operations, lab work, allied health providers and direct interactions with a medical provider. Students will spend six hours per week in the clinic during operating hours (8 a.m. - noon, 1 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and must be available for 3-4 hour blocks to meet internship requirements.

Guidelines and deadlines for applications:

Fall semester: April 30
Spring semester: October 15

  • Candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview before the priority registration deadline.
  • A mandatory orientation for all new interns takes place the week before the semester begins

Application materials include:

  • A brief cover letter explaining your interest in an internship and what you hope to gain from the experience.
  • Your resume.
  • Two completed reference check forms sent directly from your references to Michelle Larson (UW-Whitewater, UHCS, 800 W. Main Street, Whitewater, WI 53190 or email to larsonm@uww.edu). One reference must be on campus, and one off campus.
  • A completed Biology Intern Application, along with any additional materials required by the Biology Department.

Curriculum goals:

  • Following confidentiality and privacy rules in healthcare.
  • Learning about the roles of different healthcare professionals.
  • Gaining experience in a primary care lab.
  • Practicing vital sign measurement (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
  • Performing and documenting initial patient screenings.
  • Becoming familiar with medical records and documentation.
  • Assisting with patient education based on interests and experience.
  • Working with a clinical preceptor on a project within set guidelines.

Doctoral Practicum Counseling Training Program

A non-clinical Interpersonal Violence Prevention Education internship opportunity within UHCS does not involve direct patient care, but rather focuses on administrative, research, data analysis, marketing, and other programming related functions within Interpersonal Violence Prevention efforts.

Interpersonal Violence Prevention (IVP) Education refers to comprehensive education that focuses on addressing the root causes of interpersonal violence such as consent, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, domestic/relationship violence, sexual exploitation and retaliation prevention and intervention. IVP provides awareness, education, and prevention strategies to address the way individual, relationship, community, and societal factors impact interpersonal violence and aim to prevent violence before it occurs.

The undergraduate and graduate prevention education interns will be trained to provide consistent, thorough information about sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, domestic/relationship violence, sexual exploitation and retaliation prevention and intervention, and related topics, to the Whitewater campus and community via physical and digital marketing materials, events, and social media content. We are looking for flexible and committed individuals who are dedicated to violence prevention work through education, marketing, and the creation of social media content.

Interns will develop research, marketing, critical thinking, and leadership skills through participation in this position. They will also be involved in the design of prevention and education programs and their implementation. Prevention Education Interns will also develop presentation, facilitation, and leadership skills through participation in this opportunity. Social Media Interns will:

  • Conduct research about interpersonal violence to create bathroom/residence hall signs, event flyers, and social media posts for UHCS Interpersonal Violence Prevention
  • Use Canva in the creation of physical and digital marketing materials and social media
  • Be responsible for managing and creating content for
    • UHCS IVP podcast (new),
    • UHCS IVP webpage (in development)
    • email listserv
    • Social media: Facebook, Instagram, X, Pinterest, etc.
    • Create graphics for the IVP buttons and brochures that will be handed out at tabling and events

Interpersonal Violence Prevention (IVP) Peer Educators and Interns are trained UW-Whitewater students who support presentation and workshop development and facilitation and coordinate collaborative programming and events efforts around the UW-Whitewater campus and the Whitewater community, aiming to promote a safer campus community.

As campus leaders, IVP Peer Educators and Interns are critical to violence prevention education and awareness efforts on the UWW campus. They provide education, advocacy, and support to students across campus and to the local Whitewater community through awareness raising events, interactive workshops, and information sharing. IVP workshops and events present on a variety of topics and collaborate with other campus groups, classrooms and offices regarding topics such as Bystander Intervention, Consent, Healthy Relationships, Domestic / Relationship Violence, Human Trafficking / Sexual Exploitation, Sexual Assault / Sexual Harassment, and more.

Responsibilities

  • IVP Peer Educators will serve for at least one full semester
  • Complete the full training, which includes becoming a Certified Peer Educator through the NASPA (Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education) CPE curriculum
  • Facilitate training and programs across campus
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings
  • Additional responsibilities may be determined based on need and IVP Peer Educator interest

Wellness Peer Educators (WPEs) are UW-Whitewater students who design and implement health education programs and events for the campus community. WPEs are trained to provide presentations and coordinate campus outreach events on a variety of health topics including alcohol, drugs, mental health, and sexual health. The role is a great experience for those seeking careers in public health, health education, health promotion, communications, education, and more.

WPEs are involved in a number of educational and outreach activities on campus, including:

  • Presenting classrooms on specific health topics
  • Participating in campus-wide wellness events
  • Leading workshops
  • Conducting outreach in the residence halls, Greek Life, and other organizations
