COUNSELING SERVICES

Providing wellness-centered counseling for students

University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS) is here to support you through the real challenges of college life. Our multidisciplinary team of licensed mental health care professionals provides expert, confidential services.

We offer short-term, goal-focused counseling to help you manage stress, build on your strengths, and develop strategies that work for you. Our counselors provide inclusive, culturally responsive care in a confidential, therapeutic environment where all UW-Whitewater students belong.

On this page, you’ll find information about counseling options and crisis resources so you can choose support that fits your well-being needs. Most counseling services are available at no cost to currently enrolled students — so getting help is one less thing to worry about.

Counseling at Ambrose Health Center

UHCS employs a brief, solution-focused counseling model designed to help students manage specific challenges effectively. Students are eligible for a maximum of 14 sessions per academic year (including summer term). Frequency of therapy sessions is at most often every other week.

Services are available on both the Whitewater and Rock County campuses

  • Initial assessment and intake appointments
  • Short-term individual counseling (in-person and telehealth)
  • Crisis counseling during business hours (Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Group counseling and support groups (when available)
  • Psychoeducational workshops and outreach programs
  • Consultative services for students, faculty and staff
  • Advocacy and training initiatives
  • Couples counseling (if both individuals meet eligibility criteria)
  • Referral assistance for specialized or long-term care
  • ADHD screening and evaluation
  • Access to low-stimulation wellness resources (e.g., Relaxation Room)
  • AODA assessments for alcohol and other drug-related infractions (not court ordered)

While UHCS strives to support student well-being, some needs require services beyond our scope. Students will be referred to appropriate community resources if their needs include:

  • Long-term or intensive therapy requiring uninterrupted treatment over multiple semesters, including substance abuse treatment or eating disorder treatment.
  • Ongoing treatment for students with a recent history of multiple hospitalizations, multiple suicide attempts, and/or persistent self injury behaviors such that the best treatment would be a higher level of care
  • Crisis counseling outside of business hours or on weekends (Learn about your options in a crisis)
  • Mandated therapy or assessments for court or employment purposes
  • Psychological evaluations for learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, or forensic purposes
  • Mental health fitness evaluations for predicting future stability
  • Services for students not currently located within the state
  • Specialized treatment modalities requiring specific certification (e.g., DBT, EMDR)
  • Documentation for emotional support animals

The Employee Assistance Program at UW-Whitewater can provide free counseling for faculty and staff. To learn more, visit UW-Whitewater’s EAP web page or contact Human Resources at 262-472-1024.
