Email Lists

There are three options available to you for creating mailing lists.

Users can create personal mailing lists from their outlook account (UW-Whitewater email). Simply go into the Contacts portion of Outlook and select "New Contact Group" to create a new mailing list.

Users can also request the creation of an Outlook distribution list or request an external distribution list using the Listserv service. The below chart describes when to use each type of list:

Who is sending to this list?Who is a member of this list?Recommended List Type
Only me Internal or external contacts Personal Mailing List
Only UW-Whitewater contacts Only UW-Whitewater contacts Distribution list
Any list member Internal or external contacts Listserv

To request an Outlook Distribution List, please contact the TSC Helpdesk at 262-472-HELP(4357) or via email at helpdesk@uww.edu.

To request a Listserv, please fill out the request form below.

What do you want the list name to be? The list name will be the email address of the list. For example, if you enter "mylist", your list's posting-address will be: mylist-l@listserv.uww.edu.

Most lists are Unmoderated. Moderated lists require you, the list owner, to approve every message before it goes to the list. This can be a lot of work and requires your daily attention.
Do you want the Subscribe policy to be Open or Closed? Most lists have an Open policy. A Closed Subscribe policy requires you, the list owner, to approve every Subscribe request. This can be a lot of work and requires your daily attention.
Do you want the Unsubscribe policy to be Open or Closed? Most lists have an Open policy. A Closed Unsubscribe policy requires you, the list owner, to approve every Unsubscribe request. This can be a lot of work and requires your daily attention.
Do you want replies to message sent from the listserv to be directed to the list, or to the person who submitted the message? Most lists have responses directed to the entire list to encourage discussion. However, it may be preferred that responses go to just the person who submitted the message if the list will be used for announcements. (This option can be changed at any time by sending an email to the TSC Helpdesk.)
Do you want the list to be archived? Most lists are not archived. A list that is archived will have all messages sent to the list saved for 6 months so that they can be viewed using a web browser. If you choose to have your list archived, you will need to provide your subscribers with a URL to your list archive.

To manage an existing listserv, please go to http://listmanager.uww.edu/.

Information on Listserv

You can send or "post" a message to a listserv by sending an email message to "listname@listmanager.uww.edu". Below is an example of message to be sent to a listserv. Remember to change the listname to the name of an actual listserv.

To: listname-l@listmanager.uww.edu
Subject: Sample Subject
Message body: This is the message body that will be sent to the list.

Listserv requests

UW-Whitewater uses a listserv system called Listmanager. You can interact with Listmanager by sending requests in the body of an email message sent to "lyris@listmanager.uww.edu". You can also send requests directly to "listname-request@listmanager.uww.edu". Do not put your commands on the subject line; Listmanger does not process the subject line and it is best to leave it blank. You may put multiple Listmanager requests in the same mail message; put each request on a line by itself. Listmanager will try to interpret every line of text in the body of your message as a request. To prevent this, you can type "end" on a separate line following the last request (useful if you use a signature). Below is a list of the most common Listmanager listserv commands, as well as a description of the command's purpose. Some of the requests require that you specify a listname for the command to work; remember to change the listname to the name of an actual listserv.

You can subscribe to a listserv by sending an email containing the information below. Upon subscribing, you will receive a confirmation and an introductory message. Remember to replace listname with the name of the actual list.
