Building a Legacy: 50 Years of KEMPA

Get your students motivated for an exciting year ahead in journalism! Give their skills and knowledge an important boost to get them going! The Kettle Moraine Press Association (KEMPA) is ready to help you make that happen with a fun and educational field trip to our Fall Scholastic Journalism Conference. The conference features workshops that support student yearbooks, magazines, newspapers, websites, broadcasting and more!

KEMPA’s goal is to support both student journalists and advisers. By offering programs like our summer journalism camp, winter adviser’s retreat and fall student conference during the year, we can help build your program.

At our Fall Scholastic Journalism Conference Friday, Oct. 6, 2023 in UW-Whitewater we connect you and your students to professionals, advisers and media professionals in our KEMPA community. We are looking forward to helping your staff build their skills, be inspired by winning contest entries and celebrate their accomplishments.

Our theme, Building a Legacy, emphasizes the need to build our journalism skills and our journalism programs while celebrating the history of our success. Sessions will focus on the specific skills students and programs need: team-building, photography, interviewing, writing and more!

The opening session will begin at 9:30 a.m. with announcements and awards, featuring a special keynote speaker at 10 a.m. Two choose-your-own-adventure workshop sessions will last 45 minutes starting at 10:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Advisers and presenters are invited to take part in the annual KEMPA membership luncheon meeting at 11:45 a.m. to receive awards, elect new members and celebrate KEMPA’s 50 year legacy.

This event is available to 9-12 grade students interested in media and their advisers/teachers.

We know that parents and children value the ability to be able to call each other at a moment's notice. For that reason, we do not prohibit cell phones at camp, but ask that cell phone use does not interfere with the event and other participants. Parents are responsible for setting clear guidelines for cell use with their child. We will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

We receive many questions from registrants. Click here to review our frequently asked questions about registering and attending an event.
