A Population History of the Midwest

Jonathan Burkham, Associate Professor, Geography, Geology & Environmental Science

Based on his recently released book, Migrant Midwest: The Case for Immigration and Economic Growth in the Heartland, Burkham will share a historical account of how the economic development of the heartland was driven by migration. "America First" policies of the early 20th century and today are seen as a reaction to that migration, and a misunderstanding of how immigrants assimilate. He will review current population trends and immigration policy, which raise concerns that we are entering "demographic winter" - conditions of population stagnation and loss - with profound implications for the economy.
