Theory and Methods in Teaching Heritage Speakers
Heritage speakers grow up with exposure to a non-English language and develop some degree of proficiency in it. This course explores theories in bilingual development, sociolinguistics, and language teaching in order to understand best practices in, and develop coherent materials for, teaching heritage language learners. Many examples will be drawn from Spanish, but teachers of all heritage languages are welcome: Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Polish, etc. Course content will follow the table of contents to the course text (linked below). Limited non-credit/continuing education registration spots available.
