College of Letters and Sciences
The College of Letters and Sciences forms the core of the University, providing students with the essential elements of a liberal education in humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. The college fosters personal and professional growth by offering challenging and relevant courses through the general education program, specialized and career-oriented majors and minors, and graduate programs with other colleges. As undergraduates and graduates in the College of Letters and Sciences, students develop diverse perspectives, civic responsibility and engagement, and personal and professional integrity while preparing for careers and life-long learning.
In order to achieve this mission, faculty and staff are dedicated to developing innovative pedagogy, and connecting academic knowledge with experience through international study, undergraduate and graduate research, and internships. Faculty and staff create, expand, and disseminate knowledge and understanding through research, scholarship, and creative work, with students as essential participants and contributors. The college seeks to use the knowledge and expertise of faculty and students to improve society by participating in programs that meet the needs and engage the interests of the university campus and the broader community.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Nick Gulig, associate professor of languages and literatures, was named to the two-year term of State Poet Laureate of Wisconsin. As the State Poet Laureate, Gulig will serve as an ambassador for the literary craft, while simultaneously undertaking a project that will be completed by the end of 2024. He will give talks at various seminars, workshops and similar venues throughout Wisconsin.
Andrea Romero, associate professor in the departments of biology, environmental science, and women’s and gender studies, will be a Fulbright Scholar for the 2023-2024 academic year. Romero will spend five months in Jordan, conducting research and establishing a partnership between undergraduate students at UW-Whitewater and Jordanian university students to further the project.
Nic Tippery, associate professor of biology, and two undergraduate researchers, co-authored a study regarding implications for public and private land management strategies, which was published in the Cambridge University Press journal Invasive Plant Science and Management.
