HOUSING EXEMPTIONS, DEPOSITS, AND CONTRACT CANCELLATIONS
This page contains information for students who would like to request a housing exemption, a refund of their housing deposit, or a cancellation of their housing contract. Requirements, processes and instructions can be found below.
Housing exemption overview
UW-Whitewater follows the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents residency requirement. First- and second-year students who graduated less than two years ago from high school are required to reside in university-operated housing when space is available unless an exemption is approved.
Students seeking an exemption must apply before submitting a housing contract. Students should not make a commitment for alternate housing until University Housing has approved their exemption.
- Log in to the Housing Student Portal using your Net ID and password.
- Select Exemption Request.
- Complete the request and upload all required documentation.
- Submit the request.
All exemption requests are reviewed by the Exemption Review Team. Students will be notified of the decision through their UW-Whitewater email account.
Deposit refund
Students new to University Housing who paid the $125 housing deposit may receive a full refund when their academic-year contract cancellation request is received and approved by May 1.
- Log in to the Housing Student Portal using your Net ID and password.
- Select Deposit Refund Request.
- Complete the request.
- Submit the request.
Once approved, refunds are processed within ten days of submission. If a new incoming student decides to no longer attend UW-Whitewater, the housing contract will be cancelled after notifying the Admissions Office.
Contract cancellation
After May 1, the housing deposit is nonrefundable. Students seeking to cancel their housing contract after May 1 must submit a cancellation request.
If the cancellation is approved before occupancy:
- A $125 termination fee will be assessed, or forfeiture $125 housing deposit will be applied toward the termination fee.
- If the student did not pay a housing deposit, the $125 termination fee will be charged to the student’s university account.
University Housing may waive the termination fee when documented circumstances support an approved exception.
Review the Housing and Dining Contract Terms and Conditions [PDF] for complete cancellation requirements, including requests submitted after occupancy.
- Log in to the Housing Student Portal using your Net ID and password.
- Select Housing Contract Cancellation Request.
- Complete the request and upload any required documentation.
- Submit the request.
Submitting a request does not automatically release a student from the housing contract. University Housing will notify the student of its decision through their UW-Whitewater email account.
