UW-Whitewater provides storage for university related coursework or business. Google Drive is available to all students and employees. Employees are provided with network based storage. The chart below describes UW-Whitwater's storage offerings:

External hard drives, DVD-Rs and/or paper are the best options for long term data storage. If the archived data contains sensitive information, keep it under lock and key.

Google Drive

This is UW-W's online storage location for files, accessible from ANYWHERE on or off campus. Google drive SHOULD NOT be used for sharing  sensitive information.

Simply log into Google Drive with your Net-ID and upload/download files, create and edit files online and share files and folders with others.

Your Google Drive account will remain active for approximately nine months after you are no longer an active student or employee. Please be sure to copy your files before your account expires.

Google Sites

This is UW-W's online storage location for files, accessible from ANYWHERE on or off campus through the use of a website. Google sites SHOULD NOT be used when sharing campus sensitive information.

Simply log into Google Sites with your UW-Whitewater email address and password, then select the Google Sites page you wish to edit or click the "Create" button to create a new site. Once on your Google Site page, you can easily edit your webpage, upload/download files, create and edit files online and share files and folders with others.

Your Google Sites account will remain active for approximately nine months after you are no longer an active student or employee. Please be sure to copy your files before your account expires.

Staff

Network Drives (H: drive, T: drive, G: drive)

Network drives are securely backed up and accessible from anywhere: classrooms, labs, and even from computers off campus. Visit Remote Access for information on how to connect remotely.

  • T: drive is for your project and group files

  • G: drive is for your personal work files
    • Mac: A-G: data1.uww.edu, H-M: data2.uww.edu, N-S: data3.uww.edu. T-Z: data4.uww.edu

Archiving

UW-Whitewater's file storage options do not provide any automated archiving or records retention functions. Each department is responsible for determining their required records retention intervals and ensuring that files are maintained according to the appropriate records schedule. For more information on records management, visit the library's website.

Legal Access to Electronic Files / Records

UW Whitewater complies with all legal requests for information, including those requests for data included as part of a subpoena, e-discovery litigation action or Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

In order to facilitate an appropriate transition of business records during a staff member's departure, ICIT can make a copy of a departing employee's email and network file storage available to the employee's supervisor. This is done only upon request, and must be requested within 7 days of the employee's end date and requires approval of Provost (or designee) in the case of faculty or Vice Chancellor of Administrative Affairs (or designee) in the case of all other staff.

You may submit a request for a project drive (T:) folder by contacting the TSC Helpdesk.

Connect to Network Storage from a Mac

  1. Determine which storage server and share you need to connect to:

    Personal Data (G: drive for Windows users)

    There are four different servers. Select which server you need based on the first character of your Net-ID.

    • A-G – Data1.uww.edu
    • H-M – Data2.uww.edu
    • N-S – Data3.uww.edu
    • T-Z – Data4.uww.edu

    The names of the shares on the servers match the short names of the servers (Data1, Data2, Data3, and Data4).

    Once connected to the share, open the folder named with the first character of your Net-ID, then the folder name that matches your Net-ID.

    Departmental Data (H: drive for Windows users)

    There is one server for departmental data: Dept.uww.edu

    The names of the shares on the server represent the different departments on campus.

    Shared Data (T: drive for Windows users)

    There is one server for shared data:  Shared.uww.edu

  2. From Finder, select "Go Connect to Server"
  3. In the Connect to Server window, type the server name you wish to connect to preceded by "smb://" (e.g. smb://data1.uww.edu).
  4. When prompted to authenticate, enter your Net-ID and password.
  5. Once you are connected to the server, mount the appropriate share as identified in Step 1.

UW-Whitewater offers Kumo, a tool that simplifies access to the cloud storage service Google Drive. With Kumo enabled, your Google Drive will show up as the M: drive on the workstation, allowing you to save and open files just like you can with your other mapped drives. Check out our FAQs for more information about Kumo.

Kumo is now available on PC for students in all general access labs. Faculty and Staff may also access Kumo by signing up for the Kumo Pilot Study. To sign up for the pilot please contact: icit-techpilots@uww.edu. Kumo is currently available for PC only with a wide-spread launch coming soon.

Kumo FAQs

Easy access to your Google Drive files when using a lab computer or campus-owned workstation. You could use a thumb drive, but wouldn't it be better if you could always be connected to your files in the cloud? This site lets you configure your options for doing just that.


You do not have to use an internet browser to access your Google Drive when using Kumo. Your google drive files will be available on the M: drive.


No, your Google Drive will not change. However, Google Drive allows for characters such as \ or / in folder names and possibly files. These characters will not show up on the mapped Kumo drive as Windows does not allow those characters in folder and file names.

Your change will be synced within 30 seconds. You might need to refresh the window in order to see it. You can do this by clicking on the window and either pressing the F5 key, or right-clicking and selecting Refresh.


Google Drive is  the only cloud storage option that can currently be used with Kumo.


No, you can access your cloud storage via a browser if you prefer. Kumo is an additional way to easily access your cloud storage from a UW-Whitewater campus computer.


'Kumo' is a Japanese (hirigana) word that means both 'cloud' and 'spider'. We thought the juxtaposition fit well with our goal to connect you to your 'web' of stuff.


Very. All file transfers to and from the storage providers are encrypted. And at no time do we ever see or store your usernames and passwords. When you authorize Kumo to access your files, technicians receive bits of information from the storage provider that is later used to confirm that authorization. This is the only thing stored on campus. You can revoke our authorization at any time at the website of the storage provider or by clicking the 'Deauthorize' button. 


We do record some usage data, including the file size and begin/end times of the transfer. This data is recorded strictly for internal reporting of aggregate usage so that we can monitor and improve the service. We do not record the names of your files, nor do we record anything about the content of your files (other than the size.) We are not at all interested in what it is that you're moving around. The full list of what we record is as follows:

  • Your user ID
  • The ID of the storage provider to which you were uploading or downloading
  • The amount of data transferred, in bytes
  • The start and end times of the data transfer
  • Whether the transfer was an upload or a download
  • Whether the transfer succeeded
