Governance

Aligning Information Technology with the mission and strategic goals of the university is crucial for success. UW-Whitewater's shared governance structure manages the priorities and strategic direction of IT on campus, and is designed to ensure:

  • Clear definition of roles and responsibilities across departments.
  • Established processes for decision-making.
  • Clear communication of policies and processes to the university community.
  • A continuous feedback loop for the university community with IT Services.

IT Services governance structure:

  • Executive Tier ensures strategic alignment and vision setting.
  • ITS Advisory Group guides long-term strategic planning and vision articulation.
  • University Technology Committee addresses operational effectiveness and communication.

IT Services Governance

Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer, Sara Deschner, serves as a member of Chancellor Corey A. King's Cabinet to:

  • Seek guidance on the vision and strategic direction for the use of technology at UW-Whitewater;
  • Sponsor, guide, and inform major technology projects;
  • Establish other technology governance groups as needed;
  • Establish a framework/guideline for prioritizing major technology projects; and
  • Monitor accountability in relation to meeting technology objectives.

ITS Advisory Group:

  • Serves as a key element in the information technology (IT) governance structure;
  • Defines the desired state of university technology to support and advance the institutional mission over the long term;
  • Proactively identifies strategic technology projects, areas for significant investment, and systemic problems that require university-level focus;
  • Identifies and advises on barriers that could impede the successful realization of the technology vision; and
  • Participates in the IT strategic planning process to ensure alignment with the university's strategic goals. 

The ITS Advisory Group includes the following members:

  • Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer
  • Athletics Director
  • University Relations representative
  • Compliance and Risk Management representative
  • Division of Academic Affairs representatives, including the Deans of UWW's five colleges and other department leaders in the division
  • Division of Administrative Affairs representatives, including direct reports to the Vice Chancellor of Finance and Administrative Affairs
  • Division of Student Affairs representatives, including direct reports to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs

The University Technology Committee (UTC):

  • Serves as a key element in the information technology (IT) governance structure;
  • Provides a forum for discussion of and feedback on operational and tactical technology issues;
  • Assists in planning for the future communication technology needs of the university; and
  • Assesses current university-IT Services communication processes and provides feedback.

UTC includes the following members:

  • Registrar
  • Whitewater Student Government representative
  • Academic Staff Assembly representative
  • Faculty Senate representative
  • University Staff Council representative
  • College of Arts and Communication representative
