PROGRAM PATHWAYS

The LIFE Program offers two distinct pathways designed to support students at different stages of their college experience. Each pathway builds skills related to independence, employment, and community engagement while providing appropriate levels of support.

All students begin in the two-year Basic Program. During their final semester of the Basic Program, they may apply to continue in the Advanced Program.

Each program is a stand-alone certificate, and students who complete them participate in the UW-Whitewater commencement ceremony for each.

Basic Program (Years 1-2)

The Basic Program provides a strong foundation for students as they begin their inclusive college experience. Students focus on developing skills, exploring interests, taking classes, and engaging with all the campus has to offer.

Students in the Basic Program:

  • Develop foundational academic, social, and independent living skills
  • Explore personal interests and career goals
  • Take LIFE coursework and select university classes
  • Engage in campus activities and student organizations
  • Live on campus in Tutt Residence Hall
  • Receive structured support across academic, residential, and campus settings

Advanced Program (Years 3-4)

The Advanced Program is designed for students who are ready to apply what they have learned in more independent, real-world environments. Instruction and support shift toward employment, gradually increasing adult responsibilities, preparing for community integration, and making safe choices.

Students in the Advanced Program:

  • Live in apartments near campus
  • Apply classroom learning into the natural environment
  • Focus on securing and maintaining a part-time job
  • Increase independence and adult decision-making
  • Prepare for long-term community living
  • Receive individualized support from Peer Coaches and LIFE staff
