IM Sports Officials & Scorekeepers

The Intramural Sports program would not be the program it is today without the valuable contributions of student officials and scorekeepers. The purpose of this site is to specifically provide information for current and prospective student employees as our employment opportunities grow. There are resources galore all over the site and we encourage you utilize anything at your disposal! Questions or concerns may be addressed to imsports@uww.edu at any time. Thank you to all current, former and future officials and scorekeepers for your contributions! We could not do what we do without you!

We also encourage community members, especially those who may be affiliated with an organization or event, to check out our Officials Association, as we'd be happy to help provide officials if we are in the position to do so!

Becoming an Official or Scorekeeper

As we've mentioned throughout our site, there is no formal application, nor are there interviews to become an official or scorekeeper with Intramural Sports. All you have to do is express interest in the position. Whether you are committed to working or if you want more information to see if the job is right for you, simply get in-touch with us and we'll add you to our contact list of prospective officials and/or scorekeepers. This list is used to send emails and communication regarding upcoming trainings/meetings and employment opportunities. You may request to be removed from this list at any time. Expressing interest does not mean you will receive a position on our staff; you still have to attend applicable training clinics and meetings.

Not sure if you are classified as a "new" or "returning" staff member? Check out the remaining tabs to the right of this table.

How can I express interest in the positions? Do at least one of the following:
- complete our online interest form - linked here
- visit our job posts in Handshake
- fill out a paper form in Williams Center Room 100 or at applicable campus information fairs/tables
- email SchneideMD30@uww.edu
- email imsports @uww.edu
- call our office at 262-472-1145
- stop by Williams Center Room 100 and speak with us
- talk to an on-site staff member at an Intramural Sports event

Returning staff members are defined as someone who has worked with the program within the last twelve calendar month.

Returners do not need to attend a new officials meeting; simply attend the training meetings you're interested in working!

Current Staff Resources

This section is intended for individuals who are currently employed as officials or scorekeepers with the Intramural Sports program.

Coming Soon

We are updating our employee handbook over the 2021-22 academic year. This section will be updated over Summer 2022.

Our participants take Intramural Sports seriously, which is one of the many things we love about our campus! With the level of seriousness, competition and passion comes high expectations of strong officiating performances from our staff. While we will support our officials and scorekeepers unconditionally, we do expect staff to meet a few expectations to uphold the quality reputation of our program. These expectations are categorized into two main categories:

Be a good employee first Be the best official or scorekeeper possible
- be on time for your shift - hustle and get into position as best you can
- communicate in every way possible - study your rules and clinics often
- use Humanity resources and set availability - review articles and points of emphasis
- look the part; wear the proper uniform - have a loud, crisp whistle
- practice good customer service - have solid signals and reporting mechanics
- answer participant questions and concerns - take your time and be organized
- show respect to your supervisor(s) - know policies and procedures
- take evaluations & feedback  constructively - do not engage in poor conduct with participants
- be as helpful as possible - never show favoritism
- have a positive, welcoming attitude - always try to get better each shift/each game

Of course, there are more things we can emphasize, but officiating and scorekeeping can be especially hard jobs. The bottom line is to do your best any way you can. Ask for help when you need it and don't be afraid to have open dialogue with participants. As long as they are respectfully addressing you, you should never have an issue with helping them.

Training Clinics & Handouts

Access our current library of training clinic presentations, agendas, handouts and other educational resources.

This section is intended to share training clinic materials so all staff can reference items at any time as we all try to improve our officiating craft. Reviewing these items is not a substitution for attending clinics.

Coming Soon - section will be updated as clinics take place.

Rulebooks are currently being updated by staff and will be posted some time during the 2021-22 academic year.

Signal and mechanic handouts will be posted once training clinics have been designed for 2021-22.

Additional handouts will be posted once training clinics have been designed for 2021-22. JM1   JM2

No, anyone is welcome! We do encourage Intramural Sports involvement for those who meet employment eligibility requirements, however, because Intramural Sports provide opportunities to improve, get experience and build connections!

Yes, however some circumstances apply. As members of the UW-Whitewater campus community, we must be very careful about officiating UW-Whitewater Club Sports teams because of implications connected to favoritism. Club Sports teams may also require certain levels of experience before officials can get on the field/court.

Yes! While most community/campus opportunities we receive and topics we cover are related to officiating, scorekeeping opportunities could present themselves.

Depending on the season we may be in, common topics covered at meetings or in point-of-emphasis messages include:

- what it takes to be a good official
- how to communicate with coaches, players, administrators and partners/game admin
- how to register with community organizations/get games
- play calling & situation review/analysis
- advanced signals, mechanics and positioning
- how to interpret evaluations
- community camp opportunities
- professionalism and expectations
- uniform and equipment requirements
- REFEREE Magazine article reviews
- upcoming community opportunities and association meetings
- and much, much more!

Yes! We will happily accept donations for our success closet. Equipment and uniform donations help our students build their officiating wardrobe without having to worry about the financial implications of doing so. We also accept monetary donations, which go towards the purchase of educational materials and subscriptions. Anything helps and we are very appreciative of your consideration! Donations of any kind can be sent to:

The most popular activities are basketball and volleyball. We do have resources available to assist with the training and development of football, soccer and baseball/softball officials and umpires as well.

Contact Matt Schneider at SchneideMD30@uww.edu, imsports@uww.edu or by calling 262-472-5654. We appreciate as much advance notice as possible so we can contact officials on your behalf. Since our members are primarily students, we will not distribute personal contact information other than what is accessible via the UW-Whitewater campus directory.

While we take a huge amount of pride in developing young officials, referees and umpires, it is important to acknowledge these individuals are students and may not be available to assist due to academic or other obligations. We would also be happy to work with your organization to develop a ride share program, as not all of our student officials have the necessary means to travel to and from events.
