Teaching for Biliteracy

This course will focus on teaching for biliteracy and supporting emergent biliteracy amongst heritage and bilingual learners who have not experienced consistent bilingual and biliteracy education in their times in schools. We will focus on bidirectional transfer of literacy skills – or how reading and writing skills, strengths, and abilities can strengthen and inform those in another language. As a group, we will strengthen our understanding of biliteracy strategies, and will collectively develop and share units that combine our knowledge of becoming multilingual language arts teachers to differentiate for the range of language and literacy confidences common in heritage language classes.

*This offering is not part of the WI Reading License series. We will be using a synchronous, video-based and interactive virtual classroom, as we do in the other core Certificate in Heritage Language Education offerings.
