Growing Critical Bilingual Literacies in Heritage Language and ESL Contexts

This event has concluded or in progress.  Conctact cushingj@uww.edu to be notified of future events.

This is a 3-part interactive webinar series. It will be video-based and real-time. We will use Webex and Google Classroom to create as close to an in-person environment as we can. Sessions will be held synchronously, 2:30-4pm CST on July 27, 28, & 29. Registration is for all three sessions.

  • July 27: We will begin by guiding educators in enacting a critical bilingual literacies approach to teaching and learning with bilingual/multilingual students, specifically considering ways to plan around the "Temas, Textos, and Translanguaging" framework in heritage language and ESL contexts.
  • July 28: In the second session, we will guide participants in choosing mentor texts and conducting text analysis to develop Reading-in-Community plans, which centers the reading practices of bilingual/multilingual learners in our classrooms and creates greater opportunities for children and youth to engage with a text.
  • July 29: In the third session, educators will explore ways to guide their students in naming and resisting harmful dominant narratives by researching and examining counter-narratives.

We will present these sessions translingually, using features from Spanish and English.
