Language Ideologies in the Spanish as a Heritage Language Classroom

What can we do to create nurturing language environments for many different types of Spanish to flourish and grow? How can we recognize and combat language bias in our Spanish heritage language classes? We will share activities that demonstrate the use of sociolinguistic tools to identify and analyze natural language variations in Spanish, as well as the social judgments that often accompany them. As educators, you can adapt these activities to meet the needs of your own student communities and engage both you and your students in conversations around how language ideologies appear in our classrooms and schools. These conversations will provide tools to empower your students to push back against linguistic discrimination and take agency over their own linguistic choices.
