Spanish as a Heritage Language Teaching En Comunidad
In En Comunidad, Carla España and Luz Yadira Herrera offer a framework or teaching bilingual Latinx youth that affirms their identities, multilingualism, and cultural practices. It supports Spanish Heritage Language teachers in keeping social justice and critical consciousness at the front and center of heritage language teaching and learning, through being in solidarity with youth and communities. During this webinar, the authors will outline how En Comunidad can be used to support heritage language learners and teachers in growing confidence and reading-in-community using critical storytelling and mentor texts. Reading-in-community with heritage learners creates opportunities to engage with culturally sustaining texts, examine harmful dominant narratives, and challenge these with counternarratives. We will share ways to adapt En Comunidad to heritage settings – especially with older learners. Teachers who join this webinar will have the chance to ask questions and share examples of how they are using – and planning to use En Comunidad with their heritage learners. Teachers will get access to share folders to upload and access these materials to adapt and use for their own teaching.
