NC-SARA (State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement) Professional Licensure

Federal regulations have been adopted that create disclosure requirements for Professional Licensure programs regardless of the mode of delivery in that the rules apply to both face-to-face and distance education programs.  Per the rules, institutions are required to determine the states in which a student and prospective student is located for the purpose of disclosing state-specific Professional Licensure information to students based on the state in which a student is located. Professional Licensure contact information for each state, can be found on NC-SARA website under Professional Licensure Directory page.

Please see the information below if you are a prospective or current UW-W student interested in pursuing professional licensure after graduation in one of the programs listed below.

College of Education and Professional Studies

Teacher candidates who successfully complete a program approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), meet the licensure requirements in the state of Wisconsin. Educators who complete a preparation program approved by the DPI, and then receive a license from the department, are usually eligible to receive a one-year license from other states.  Most states require that educators who were prepared in another state complete at least one state-specific requirement (e.g., course, test), and the one-year, or other temporary license, gives educators the opportunity to work in a school while they complete the requirement(s).

Completion of teacher preparation programs in the College of Education and Professional Studies meets licensure requirements in WI. UW-Whitewater has not made a determination of whether programs' curricula meets the educational licensure requirements in other US States or territories. However, all programs work with students individually to ensure that students meet licensure requirements in their location. It is very important that individuals seeking licensure in another state obtain the most recent certification/licensure information directly from the state in which they seek employment.  You can find contact information on each state licensure office here.

Licensing across the US for social workers requires a BSW or MSW from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited Program.  A Social Work degree from UW-W meets this requirement; therefore, a social work degree obtained from UW-W will meet the initial licensing requirements for all 50 states.  Each state has additional requirements including an exam, and post-graduate professional experience for LCSW licensure.  There is a national exam through the Association of Social Work Boards, but not all states have adopted this.

Please visit the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) website for more information regarding licensing requirements and other social work regulations.
