What care does University Health and Counseling Services offer?
University Health and Counseling Services offers a range of counseling, health and wellness resources designed to support and care for your student during their college journey. Our confidential services include health services, in-person and tele-counseling, and psychiatric support, and most services are available for free.

We aim to provide short-term, strengths- and goal-oriented counseling in a therapeutic environment where all Warhawks belong. Should your student need support, they can schedule an appointment by calling UHCS at 262-472-1305.

How do I talk to my student about reaching out for support?
If you notice changes in your student, it’s essential to reassure them that many students experience challenges while in college and seeking help is a positive step toward building skills to navigate the difficulties life brings. Encourage them to check out our wellness programming and self-care resources, schedule an appointment with one of our University Health and Counseling team members, schedule an appointment with a master’s counseling student at Winther Counseling Services at McCutchan, or use virtual counseling services through the Mantra Health Care Hub.

You might be wondering how to recognize if your student is facing mental health challenges. Here are some common signs your student may be experiencing distress:

  • Expressing thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Prolonged sadness or tearfulness
  • Extreme mood swings or unusual behavior or speech
  • Major changes in sleep patterns (e.g., little need for sleep, oversleeping)
  • Changes in personal hygiene or self cares
  • Changes in weight or eating behaviors or fixation on appearance
  • Using drugs or alcohol repeatedly
  • Increased agitation, irritability, or nervousness

Here are ways you can provide support:

  • Listen without judgment.
  • Help them brainstorm solutions that have worked for them before.
  • Help them develop coping strategies and take positive actions while respecting their autonomy.
  • Encourage seeking medical or mental health support if needed.
  • Respect their privacy while offering support.
  • Assist them in connecting with resources and encourage them to reach out for help, including for crisis support.

Are the services confidential? Can I be involved?
Services are confidential. Students can authorize UHCS to share information with their parents or guardians by signing a written release, available through the MyUHCS Portal. The only exceptions are in cases where there is clear and immediate danger to the student or others, as mandated by law.

What if I have concerns about my student?
If you’re concerned about your student, please contact UHCS at 262-472-1305 to consult with one of our clinicians. Our staff are experienced in providing consultation and supportive resources for students in distress.

If you feel that your student is at risk and needs to be connected with campus resources that will intervene, be sure to reach out to our CARE Team by submitting a CARE referral.
