COAC Advising Locations

Art majors are assigned a faculty advisor after they’ve accrued 24 units.

Each semester, all majors in Art and Art Ed are required to meet with an advisor in the Department of Art and Design prior to registering for classes.  

Your advisor's name is listed on your WINS account. Advising sign-up sheets for a one-on-one meeting with your assigned advisor are usually posted on faculty's office doors during the two-week advising period leading up to registration. You may also schedule appointments to visit with your advisor at any time during the semester. ·       

Once you are advised, you will receive an Individualized Advising Sheet that must be turned in to the Department Office. Upon receipt of the signed Individual Advising Sheet, the Department ADA will release your Advising Hold. At that time, barring any additional holds (ie. Terms + Conditions or unpaid fees), you should be able to register for the classes you discussed in your meeting with your advisor. 

Information on Department Majors and Minors is available on the Department website and in the Undergraduate Catalog. It is each student's responsibility to meet with their advisor and become familiar with programmatic expectations. Contact the Department of Art and Design, 262-472-1324, or stop in the Department Office, CA 2070, for more information regarding the advising process. 

Communication and Journalism--includes broadcast/print/web journalism, public relations, advertising, electronic media, international journalism and corporate and health communication. 

  • Once you have earned more than 24 credits then you will be assigned an advisor in the College.

For face-to-face/in-person majors: You must participate in the Communication Department's advising event. 

  • Each semester, the Communication Department holds a two-day, drop-in style advising event. During the event, students receive one-on-one advising from an advisor from within their emphasis AND a master advisor from the department. This process ensures that students receive up-to-date disciplinary advice regarding course content and helps students refine their curriculum to match their program and career goals. 
  • Once you are advised, you must have your Advising Worksheet (to be completed before and edited during advising) turned in to the Department Office (this happens via scan, before you leave). Upon receipt of the signed Advising Worksheet, the Department ADA will release your Advising Hold. At that time, barring any additional holds (ie. Minor holds, Terms + Conditions, or unpaid fees), you should be able to register for the classes you discussed in your meeting with your advisor.
  • This process ONLY releases the Communication Department advising holds.

For online-only majors (Online Corporate and Health Communication): To remove your Communication Department Advising holds, you must email commadvising@uww.edu to schedule a virtual advising meeting.

  • Prior to the meeting, you will complete an Advising Worksheet and email the worksheet along with your current AAR to your advisor. After the meeting, the worksheet will be emailed to the Department Office where the Department ADA will release your Advising Hold. At that time, barring any additional holds (ie. Minor holds, Terms + Conditions, or unpaid fees), you should be able to register for the classes you discussed in your meeting with your advisor.
  • This process ONLY releases the Communication Department advising holds.

Students should explore the Communication Advising Canvas course. You receive an invite to participate upon entering the department.

Communication minors do not have an advising hold. 

MEDIA ARTS AND GAME DEVELOPMENT (MAGD) MAJORS (all emphases) 

  • Once you have earned more than 24 credits then you will be assigned an advisor in the College.

Look on WINS to see who is your MAGD-specific advisor.  If you do not see an advisor, they should reach out to the MAGD Coordinator. (Jeff Herriott, herriotj@uww.edu)

Each semester, all MAGD Majors are required to meet with an MAGD advisor prior to registration. A notice about MAGD Advising is emailed to students a few weeks in advance of the beginning of registration. Students are invited to sign up for an advising session at that time using an online sign up system. Students are welcome to contact advisors throughout the semester.

It is each student's responsibility to meet with an advisor and become familiar with programmatic expectations. Prepare for your appointment by bringing a copy of your Academic Advising Report (AAR) and a list of questions or concerns. Review the Schedule of Classes to get an idea of what courses you might be interested in. If any area of your AAR is bolded, be sure that you ask your advisor directly.

MAGD - Media Arts minor will also have an academic advising hold prior to registration.

In order to declare a Music major or minor, students must apply for admission into the program . Review this website for information about the application process.

All Music majors, regardless of the number of completed credits, will be advised by Music faulty advisors. Advisors are assigned as soon as the department learns of a declaration of major or minor.

Contact your advisor and make your advising appointment early. Your advisor's name is listed in your WINS account (Click AAR > ADVISORS). If you have not been assigned an advisor, please call the Music department at 262-472-1310. Use the "Directories" quick link on the UWW homepage to look up your advisor's location, phone and e-mail address.

All Music advisors reaches out to their advisees each semester. Students should contact their advisor at least 3 weeks before their registration date if they have not heard from them already.

Music minors do not have an advising hold.

Theatre and Dance assigns advisors as soon as a the major or minor is declared, regardless of credit amount. Some students will have dual advisors during their first year – one in the Academic Advising and Exploration Center and one in Theatre/Dance. Once 24 or more credits are completed, students will be advised by solely by a faculty advisor from the Theatre/Dance department.

At the beginning of each semester, the Theatre/Dance department places an advising hold on all majors and minors. Department advisors will reach out to their advisees four weeks before registration begins. Emails are sent to all majors and minors  regarding making an academic advising appointment. Students and advisors are expected to meet face-to-face, whether that be in person or via Webex. Multiple appointments may be necessary. After consultation with their advisors, students fill out an advising sheet listing the Theatre/Dance courses they intend to enroll in for the following semester. Practicums must receive permission from practicum instructors. Advisors sign off on the advising sheet, which is then turned into the department office. Department holds are then lifted by the department.

For students intending to pursue BFA programs of study: it’s important to begin the advising process in the first semester to ensure that prerequisites are fulfilled in their proper order and that the student is ready to apply for BFA status in the second semester of their second year.

First year students should stop by the department office to pick up advising forms and program maps prior to their first advising meeting. Theatre majors and Dance minors have a well-defined track mapped through each year. The major question for new Theatre majors is whether they intend to pursue BA or BFA, and which emphasis of study within the BFA.

The student should bring a list of other questions and items of concern for discussion at the advising meetings.
