Foundations for Becoming a Reading Teacher

Are you finding yourself teaching literacy and developing identities as readers amongst your learners? Are you seeing the impacts of approaches like free voluntary reading (FVR), readers’ and writers’ theater, units of writing study, but don’t feel confident yet with what it means to teach reading and writing? This course will give you an overview of what goes into creating an early and developmental reading program. This includes developing the skills necessary for critical reading; developing identities as readers; and supporting your students in developing their own tastes and attitudes towards different kinds of books. We’ll also learn how to adjust and adapt materials and teaching methods to meet individual reading needs.
