Auditing Courses at UW-Whitewater

Your Next Steps

After you have submitted your completed online application, please allow up to 3-5 business days for your application to be reviewed and processed by University staff.   Once your application has been processed, the Admissions Office will send an email to your personal email address and provide you with your University Net-ID and your seven-digit UW-Whitewater student ID number.

  1. Once you have your University Student ID number you can log into your UW-Whitewater account and create a password.Your Net-ID will give you access to UW-Whitewater online systems, including University email and WINS (UW-Whitewater student information system). Before you can access these systems, you must create a password. Create your password here.


  1. The Registrar’s Office will send a second email to your UW-W email address with your next steps. It is important to act immediately on the instructions in this email. You will be directed to log in to your WINS Student Center using your NET-ID and password. While in WINS, you must Accept the Terms and Conditions. You must to do this for your registration to be finalized in your class. Until you accept the Terms & Conditions, there is a “hold” on your account which will prevent you from being registered in the class. To complete this step, click on Student Center, then under Financial Account, click on Terms & Conditions Click on the View/Accept button for the term you are registering for and ACCEPT (more than one term may be listed) and follow the instructions. You will need to complete this step every semester you audit courses.

Please note that it may take 24 hours for your access to UW-Whitewater’s electronic systems to be activated.


Step 2 – Audit Registration Form


You will also need to obtain an Audit Registration form either online, or from the Registrar’s Office, located in the Roseman building 2032. Complete the form with all the required personal and course information. You will need to obtain the instructor’s permission to audit the course. You can find contact information for the instructor using the UW-Whitewater Directory. If they agree, they will sign the Audit Registration form and check the box indicating if you can be enrolled in a full course.

Once you have obtained instructor permission and completed the Audit Registration form, return it to the Registrar’s Office. They will register you as an auditing student, and will email you when you are officially enrolled. Note that auditing students are not enrolled in courses until after all new student orientations have taken place and only if space is still available.

Audit Registration Forms must be completed and submitted to the Registrar’s Office each semester before the last day to add a course for the session you are enrolling in. Deadlines for all terms and sessions can be found on this page by selecting the correct term.

Important: auditing students may not attend a course without proper authorization and registrar enrollment. You must be officially enrolled and on the class roster, so make sure you have completed all steps listed above before coming to campus for class.  

Other Important Information

Student ID

At UW-Whitewater, your student ID is called a HawkCard. As an auditing student, your HawkCard will serve as your library card at Andersen Library, will be used at Textbook Rental, and will grant you access to the University Center (UC) services. You can pick this up at the HawkCard Office, which is located on the second floor of University Center (UC) room 250. You do not need to get a new HawkCard each term you audit courses.  Your card will reactivate automatically. Click here for more information on the HawkCard.  


Students auditing undergraduate courses rent the majority of their required textbooks through Textbook Rental at no additional cost. Textbook Rentals is located on the lower level of the University Bookstore (Moraine Hall).  You will need to take your HawkCard with you, as well as a copy of your class schedule.  You can access your class schedule by logging into WINS. Remember to print out your schedule using “list view” in order to list the section number and instructor.  This information is needed to make sure you receive the correct textbooks for your section. Note that some professors will ask you to buy books in addition to those that you rent. Don’t forget to check the bookstore for any books that your instructor has asked you to buy.

Email and Canvas

Your instructor and the University will use UW-Whitewater email and Canvas to communicate with you about your course and other important university matters. 

Check your student email regularly. You can log in to the UW-Whitewater email system using your NET-ID and password. You UW-Whitewater email is the address your instructors will use to contact you. Make sure that you check your student email so that you don’t miss any important announcements from your professor or other university officials.

Some instructors may use Canvas. Canvas is an online management system that some instructors use to post content for their classes. Log into  Canvas using your NET-ID and password. Not all instructors use Canvas, but if yours does, be sure to check the Canvas site. For more information on how to use Canvas, click here.


Depending on the time of day your class meets, you may be required to pay for parking via a parking permit or metered stalls. More detailed information on short-term parking can be found here or longer-term parking here.

Accommodations for Auditors with Disabilities

Auditors with disabilities can apply for services through the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD). Eligibility for accommodation services is determined on an individual basis.

Audit Policy and Procedures

  1. The Registrar’s Office is the point of contact for students to begin the audit registration.
  2. Instructor and/or department chairperson permission is required to audit a course. 
  3. Auditors will be registered on a space available basis as soon as possible after the last orientation day for degree seeking students. 
  4. Auditors receive only provisional permission to attend classes unless the instructor checks the override course capacity box on your form. Registrar’s office will attempt to enroll students approx. 1 week prior to start of the term. Enrollment is dependent on course capacity. Deadline to accept forms is one day prior to the last day to enroll for regular student population. Students that do not sign their terms and conditions prior to the last day to enroll in classes for the term will not be enrolled in their requested course.
  5. Certain courses cannot be audited, including off-campus courses, College of Business and Economics courses, on-line courses and remedial courses. 
  6. Wisconsin residents who are only auditing classes in a term will pay 30% of the resident per unit academic fee and non-Wisconsin residents (according to Wisconsin Statutes 36.27(2)) will pay 50% of the non-resident fee, except for senior citizens and OASDI status (see B/C). The fees will be published in the schedule of classes each term.
  7. A student who is 60 years of age or older and a resident of Wisconsin according to Wisconsin Statutes 36.27(2) may audit eligible courses for free on a space available basis. Tuition will be waived, provided the student is registered for courses on an audit basis if this student is an audit only student.
  8. Audit fees will be waived for disabled Wisconsin residents (Wisconsin Statutes 36.27(b)) who are receiving federal Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Income Program (SSI) benefits under 42 USC4401 to 433. Verifiable documentation identifying the student as eligible for SSDI or SSI is required and should be attached to this form. 
  9. If a combination of audit and regular credit courses are taken in the same term of enrollment, the student will be charged regular tuition an-d fees for all course units, including those being audited by students who are 60 and over and those who might be receiving SSDI or SSI benefits. See paragraphs 7 & 8.
  10. International Students must consult with the International Student Advisor before registering as an audit student.
  11. Any special course fees will be assessed and paid by the student. Upon Activation an email will be sent with instructions regarding the accepting of Term and Conditions. The accepting of Terms and Conditions is required for all auditors prior to Registration. Students should not attend classes until they are enrolled.
  12. A student who opts to enroll on an auditor basis under this policy may not change to a credit basis during the term of enrollment.
  13. An audit (X) symbol will be recorded on the academic record if the instructor reports satisfactory class attendance.
  14. Access to university services will be limited to the Library and to programs, services and facilities of the University Center. A special identification card (ID) will be issued for audit-only students, which will permit them limited access to the Library and the University Center. The full price of tickets for theatre department events, cultural affairs, athletic events and other events will be charged unless stated otherwise.
