From Warhawk to Industry Leader: Mike Kennedy Takes the Helm at Indian Motorcycle

June 23, 2026

WHITEWATER, WI — For Mike Kennedy, ’89, a passion for motorcycles didn’t just shape a career—it became one.

Just two days after graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a degree in Speech Communication/Public Relations and a minor in Marketing, Kennedy began what would become a nearly four-decade journey in the motorcycle industry.

“I graduated on a Saturday, and on Monday reported into work at Harley,” Kennedy recalled in a recent interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

That first opportunity launched a career defined by leadership, innovation, and a deep understanding of the people who make the motorcycle community thrive. Today, Kennedy has come full circle. In February 2026, he was named Chief Executive Officer of Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company and one of the most recognized names in the industry.

Building a Career One Relationship at a Time

A native of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Kennedy spent nearly 28 years with Harley-Davidson, advancing through a variety of leadership roles before becoming Vice President and Managing Director of the Americas. Along the way, he earned a reputation for strengthening dealer networks, driving growth, and building lasting relationships across the industry.

Looking back, Kennedy credits much of his success to the mentors who helped shape his career.

“I think I had the luxury of working for and being mentored by some of the best people who have been in the motorcycle space over the last 50 years,” he said.

After leaving Harley-Davidson in 2018, Kennedy continued to expand his perspective on the industry. He served as President and CEO of Vance & Hines, a leading motorcycle performance parts manufacturer, before becoming CEO of RumbleOn—now RideNow Group—one of the nation’s largest powersports retailers.

Those experiences gave him a rare, 360-degree view of the motorcycle business. He has led organizations involved in manufacturing, aftermarket products, retail operations, and customer experience, gaining insights from nearly every corner of the industry.

“Now I’m sitting on the other side of companies like Harley-Davidson and companies like Indian,” Kennedy said. “I was actually their largest dealer. It was a great experience for me. I learned a ton in each one of those angles.”

Leading an American Icon

As CEO of Indian Motorcycle, Kennedy is focused on honoring the brand’s heritage while preparing it for future growth.

His priorities include strengthening dealer partnerships, improving manufacturing efficiency, expanding global reach, and maintaining a strong presence in the American Midwest.

“Our intention is to compete globally from the Midwest of America,” Kennedy said.

Under his leadership, Indian Motorcycle is consolidating production in Spirit Lake, Iowa, while emphasizing transparency, product quality, customer loyalty, and strong dealer relationships.

Kennedy also sees opportunities to welcome new riders into the sport through Indian’s popular Scout lineup and the growing pre-owned motorcycle market. At the same time, he is working to expand partnerships with aftermarket manufacturers, giving riders more opportunities to personalize their motorcycles and make them their own.

When Passion Becomes Profession

Throughout his career, Kennedy has relied on many of the same skills he developed as a Communication student at UW-Whitewater: building trust, communicating effectively, listening carefully, and developing meaningful relationships.

His story is a powerful example of how communication skills can open doors in virtually any industry—and how leadership often begins with the ability to connect with others.

For current students wondering where a Communication degree might lead, Kennedy’s journey offers an inspiring answer. What began as an enthusiasm for motorcycles evolved into a career spanning nearly four decades, multiple executive leadership roles, and ultimately the opportunity to lead one of America’s most iconic brands.

His path reminds us that passions can become professions. When paired with curiosity, hard work, and a willingness to keep learning, those passions can take you places you never imagined.
