Post-Bacc/Special/Guest Students

Information for Special Full Credential Students and Special Students without Credentials


Students who have a conferred bachelor’s degree and wish to enroll only for undergraduate coursework are considered “special students with credentials.” Students in this classification are eligible to enroll in up to 18 credits and must meet the UW-Whitewater program grade point average requirement. These students are considered to have fulfilled Proficiency, General Education, Core, and Diversity requirements. Transfer credit evaluations and Academic Advising Reports (AARs) are not available for these students and formal advising is not required.

How to apply to UW-Whitewater

Complete the online Universities of Wisconsin Application. If you are a former UW-Whitewater graduate you will apply as a readmit. If your first undergraduate degree was from an institution outside UW-Whitewater, you will apply as a transfer student. 

What to expect next

A few days after you submit your application, you’ll receive an email with information about setting up an account for our student information system, WINS. You can track your application progress, such as what documents still might be needed.

Registration

Special students may register for courses only on a space-available basis. Students must register through WINS, including signing and accepting terms and conditions.

A schedule of class information is available through the registrar’s office.

Enrollment deposit

A one-time $100 enrollment deposit is required of all new undergraduate students. This amount will be added to your student account after you register for your first semester of classes and can be viewed through Wins.

Advising

While academic advising is not required for special students, contacting an advising coordinator for assistance and/or referral may be necessary. Transcripts are not evaluated for special students, however, review of transcripts and course material may be required for permission to enroll in specific classes.

Grade point average requirements 

Certain programs require appropriate prerequisites and cumulative grade point averages higher than 2.0. You can view all program requirements by visiting our transfer student page

Financial aid

Special full credential students are not automatically eligible to apply for financial aid. Please visit our financial aid page for information on all available opportunities. 

Disability-related accommodations

The Center for Students with Disabilities collaborates with students, faculty, and staff to create an inclusive, accessible university experience. If you plan on applying for accommodations or services, please contact the Center for Students with Disabilities. Students are encouraged to apply for services as soon as possible. 

Veteran benefits 

If you meet the requirements for educational assistance for veterans, please contact the Veteran Coordinator in the Registrar’s office. Transfer students who previously used veteran benefits should also contact the Veteran Coordinator so benefits may be reactivated.

To receive credit for your military experience, please submit your DD Form 214 or military service transcript (SMART transcript) to the Admissions Office.

Special students without credentials have not received a bachelor's degree and are not required to receive formal academic advising upon enrollment. Students in this classification are admitted only for a single term and are limited to a part-time credit load. Academic Advising Reports (AARs) are not available for special students. Special students without credentials are not eligible for financial aid.

Special Students without credentials are permitted for a maximum credit limit of:

Fall or spring term: six credits 

Winterim: three credits 

Summer: a maximum of one credit per week for each of the three and six-week sessions, with the exception that you may enroll simultaneously in one three and one six-credit course. The summer maximum is 12 credits.

A Schedule of class information is available through the registrar’s office.

Placement testing

Special students who intend to take mathematics or English courses may be required to take placement tests, furnish previous course information, or ACT/SAT results to the Mathematics and/or Languages and Literatures Departments.

Course enrollment 

For course permissions, send an unofficial transcript, UW-Whitewater student ID number, and the course you would like to enroll in to the appropriate department.
