ATTENTION:

The Department of Center for Students with Disabilities seeks an Associate Counselor/Counselor (Disability Services Coordinator).

JOB DETAILS:

This position facilitates the provision of reasonable accommodations for university students with learning disabilities, mental health, chronic medical conditions, developmental disabilities (autism) and attentional disorders (AD/HD) to ensure equal access to the programs, services and activities of the institution. These populations comprise the largest group of students with disabilities seeking services through the Center for Students with Disabilities. This position will carry a case load consisting of students with these disabilities.

The Disability Services Coordinator assists faculty and staff in developing fair and effective instructional methods and adaptations to provide classroom access for this student population. This position may also participate in campus-wide training activities for students, faculty and staff on disability issues, rights and responsibilities under the law, and advocacy regarding reasonable accommodation in a post-secondary environment.

This position will participate in program development initiatives to serve the primary populations of CSD students including but not limited to teaching for credit courses, developing educational effectiveness programs and promoting community building activities and events. This position may also supervise student employees and pre-master’s interns.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or a related field
  • Two or more years of direct experience working with individuals with physical disabilities, chronic health disabilities, psychological and learning disorders including but not limited to mood, anxiety or autism spectrum disorders, learning disability/dyslexia, and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference given to applicants who have worked with a college or young adult population
  • Preference given to licensed/license eligible candidates who can supervise pre-master’s interns from relevant educational programs. Credentials to supervise pre-master's and master’s students seeking certification or licensure the following areas social work, rehabilitation counseling or counseling
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Experience interpreting various psycho-educational and psychological/neuropsychological assessment batteries used in the diagnosis of learning disabilities, mental health disorders, AD/HD, developmental disabilities and traumatic brain injury and translating the data from such reports into appropriate accommodations plans in a post-secondary setting
  2. Experience providing one-one functional assessments related to adjustment and academic accommodations
  3. Experience working with individuals who have dual or multiple mental health diagnoses
  4. Experience effectively addressing the unique concerns of people with hidden disorders (e.g. stigma, medication management and side effects, executive functioning deficits, etc.)
  5. Ability to be an effective advocate for reasonable accommodations in the context of a competitive educational environment
  6. Ability to foster independence through the development of life long self-advocacy skills and learning strategies
  7. Working knowledge of federal and state laws regarding disability rights
  8. Strong verbal and written communication and organizational skills in a fast-paced environment
  9. Excellent judgment, decision-making skills, and sense of humor when faced with conflict, competing interests, and/or time sensitive issues
  10. Ability to work independently as well as contribute to team processes at the unit and division level
  11. Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
  12. Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
QUALIFICATIONS:

75%   A. Direct Service
  1. Conduct intake appointments leading to a service eligibility determination and recommendations for reasonable accommodations as appropriate.
  2. Assist students in understanding their legal rights and responsibilities.
  3. Promote student self-reliance and the development of appropriate self-advocacy skills.
  4. Facilitate communication between faculty, staff, and students with disabilities on access and accommodation issues and provide on-going consultation and problem-solving assistance to faculty and staff in the provision of appropriate services and accommodations.
  5. Develop new and effective methods for resolving complex disability-related accommodation and adjustment issues.
  6. Communicate with parents/guardians of student clients respectfully and appropriately in a way that supports the development of student independence and accountability.
  7. Maintain confidentiality in verbal and written communications as required under the Family Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  8. Create, organize, and maintain up-to-date electronic and paper records.
  9. Stay abreast of legislation/policy and national, state, and local issues affecting access for individuals with disabilities.
  10. Conduct group sessions with students
15%   B. Institutional Support/Outreach
  1. Participate in training and teaching programs for enrolled students with disabilities including but not limited to the Summer Transition Program, New Student Seminar, and Career and Pre Vocational Preparation and related formal and informal and formal groups and individually focused activities.
  2. Develop training materials for university personnel working with students with learning, attentional, mental health and chronic medical disorders.
  3. Present to University staff and the community on disability-related topics to promote universal design in learning.
  4. Provide consultation/technical assistance on disability issues as needed or requested by individuals and groups at the University and in the community.
  5. Participate in division and institution-wide initiatives to advance opportunities for individuals with disabilities to be equitably represented in the student population, be retained, and graduate from undergraduate and graduate programs.
  6. Assist in advancing the mission and vision of the Division of Student Affairs through targeted projects, initiatives and committees.
  7. Contribute to divisional strategic priorities including campus partnerships, improved climate, etc.
  8. Represent the Division of Student Life at campus events.
  9. Promote and respect the practice of civility in the workplace.
  10. Demonstrate a commitment to organizational success.
  11. Participate in departmental and division-wide quality improvement efforts.
  12. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity.
  13. Other duties as assigned.
10%   C. Administrative Duties
  1. Contribute to program development for current and emerging populations (e.g. services for veterans, students with autism, unrepresented groups, etc).
  2. Participate in program projects and activities (e.g., search and screen committees and processes, revision of eligibility criteria, outreach and communication practices with parents, etc.).
  3. Recruit, train, and supervise interns at a level appropriate to experience and expertise. Provide on-going support, information, and resources to staff on disabilities and related trends.

The Center for Students with Disabilties is the identified unit to provide academic, housing and general access accommodations and resources to students. CSD serves over 8% of the total campus population. CSD is a collaborative unit committed to a social justice model. The department is highly engaged in universal design across disciplines, departments, units and Colleges.
