INTRODUCTION:

The James R. Connor University Center in the Division of Student Affairs seeks a Custodian.

JOB DUTIES:

This position is responsible for housekeeping duties in assigned areas of UW-Whitewater buildings, Student Dining Halls and maintaining these areas in a safe and sanitary condition. This position reports to Custodial Supervisor and works under the guidance of a Custodian Lead. This position will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

All duties are to be performed in accordance with organizational beliefs and values. Regular attendance is an essential function of the job. This position is designated at Level 1 for risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens. All established safety rules and regulations must be followed and personal protective equipment must be worn when performing job duties requiring their use.

50%   A. Routine daily maintenance of buildings

  1. Clean restrooms, dining, and public use areas
  2. Damp mop or machine scrub floors
  3. Sweep and/or dust mop hard floors surfaces
  4. Vacuum and spot-clean carpet
  5. Empty wastebaskets and remove trash from buildings
  6. Clean and dust office areas
  7. Clean hallways, stairwells, and drinking fountains
  8. Clean and sweep entryways and walk off mats; empty ash urns
  9. Clean meeting, whiteboards and trays, erasers, etc.
  10. Replenish supplies as necessary
  11. Wash walls, ceilings, inside windows, and glass building entrances
  12. Replace bulbs, clean light fixtures, and replace diffusers
  13. Open and secure buildings/rooms
  14. Other duties as assigned
35%   B. Carrying out Related Duties
  1. Clean and maintain equipment and storage areas
  2. Move furniture, equipment, supplies, etc. as required
  3. Inspect exterior building entrances for trash and dispose of appropriately
  4. Provide snow removal from building entrances and surrounding sidewalks
  5. Hot water extract all carpeted areas and clean entry mats
  6. Operation of powered custodial equipment
  7. Strip and refinish hard floor surfaces as needed
  8. Clean all HVAC grilles in assigned building areas as assigned
  9. Report needed maintenance or repairs to supervisor via work request through Custodian Lead
  10. Must be authorized to drive University vehicles
  11. Other duties as assigned
15%   C. Team Participation
  1. Assist with set-ups and tear downs for special events involving movement of equipment (i.e. chairs, tables, risers and/or portable dance floor) for workshops, sports events, etc.
  2. Clean areas between events
  3. Function as member of team in special projects (i.e. relamping, seasonal cleaning)
  4. Function as a team member in problem solving for custodial and other areas
  5. Assist other department/employees as required
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers, staff, and students
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Ability to work independently
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid WI driver’s license
  • Independently organize and prioritize workload

  • Knowledge of cleaning solutions and agents
  • Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment and materials
