J. Michael Allsen

Prof. J. Michael Allsen joined the UW-Whitewater faculty in 1996.  He holds a Ph.D in Musicology from UW-Madison, and is a specialist in Medieval and Renaissance music. Allsen has published several scholarly articles, reviews, and editions (including work in the International Trombone Association Journal), and is a contributor to the New Grove Dictionary, Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart, and other reference works. He has written program notes for the Madison Symphony Orchestra since 1984 and today annotates for several other orchestras as well.  As a trombonist, Allsen has performed primarily with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, as the orchestra’s bass trombonist since 1990.  He has also played with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra, Sacra Sinfonia, and other orchestras, as well as dates with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and Frank Sinatra, Jr., and occasional performances on sackbut.  Allsen also founded the Glenwood Moravian Trombone Choir and led the group in nearly 500 performances from 1983-2006.
