ATTENTION:

The Department of Kinesiology in the College of Education and Professional Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the area of Health Education and Health Promotion beginning August 2022. This is a 9-month position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses, as well as research, and service to the university, profession and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.

JOB DETAILS:

The successful candidate will be able to teach primarily a range of undergraduate courses related to health, theory, pedagogy, and research, as part of the Health, Physical Education and Adapted PE major, the Human Performance major and related minor programs. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that results in publications and presentations, and that contributes to advancing the department, university, the profession, and society. The candidate will be expected to participate in service activities and embrace the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion as a member of the university community.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An earned doctorate in health education, health promotion, community health, kinesiology, physical education, or a closely related field. ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2022; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2023 in advance of their first scheduled performance review.
• Demonstrated commitment to teaching, with an emphasis on promoting student success, clear evidence of scholarly potential, and commitment to serving as an active member of the department, university, and broader community.

Desired Characteristics:

• Professional preparation, and/or experience in health education
• School health teaching experience
• Experience teaching at the college level
• Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES)/Master Certified (MCHES)
• Experience teaching diverse and disadvantaged students
• Experience with online teaching or willingness to learn current and emerging practices in online teaching and learning
• Potential to foster service-based learning by taking students beyond the classroom to apply learned skills
• Experience with curriculum development and assessment
• Experience collaborating in an interdisciplinary team to advance program, department and university growth goals
• Demonstrated potential to positively impact the health of local communities

• Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
• Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Full-time teaching responsibilities include teaching courses in the Health, Physical Education, and Adapted Physical Education major, Human Performance major, and Health Promotion minor. Specific courses may include: Positive Mental Health and Well-Being Education, Nutrition and Fitness Education, PreK-12 Sexuality Education, Health Behavior Development and Society, Introduction to Quality of Life and Health Promotion, Current Topics in Health and Wellness, Stress Management, or others, depending upon qualifications, which may include graduate coursework. Research expectations include publication and presentation of peer-reviewed research in one’s area of expertise. In addition, faculty members must serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels, as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidate’s expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach in a variety of formats, including in-person, online and/or in a hybrid format.

The Department of Kinesiology (formerly HPERC) prepares teachers and professionals in physical education and the exercise sciences. The department houses two undergraduate major programs and one master’s program, including a BSE in Health, Physical Education, and Adapted PE Teacher Education, BS in Human Performance; and MSE in Professional Studies: Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Coaching.

The Department of Kinesiology is a member of the American Kinesiology Association which promotes and enhances kinesiology as a unified academic discipline involving the study of physical activity and its impact on health, society and quality of life. As part of the College of Education and Professional Studies the teacher preparation program is one of few programs in the state of Wisconsin which has received accreditation from The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

The faculty and academic staff in the Kinesiology Department are dedicated to providing high quality education for students committed to professional careers in the exercise sciences, health and physical education, health promotion, sport and recreation management, strength and conditioning, and coaching, among other health and human performance careers.
