ATTENTION:
The Department of Biology in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Biology with expertise in Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) beginning August 2024.
JOB DETAILS:
This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in biology, conducting research, and providing service to the university and community. Research expertise should complement existing faculty expertise and may/should include teaching and learning methodologies and programmatic/curricular design and assessment.
The successful candidate will have a broad general background in biology with the pedagogical skills and expertise to effectively support the diverse needs of students, particularly at the introductory level. The primary teaching responsibilities will be in Introductory Biology (for majors and non-majors), as part of the Biology and General Education programs. The ideal candidate would also be able to teach courses in Human Anatomy & Physiology. The candidate will be expected to pursue an active research agenda in DBER that engages undergraduate students and contributes to advancing the department, university, profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities as a member of the university community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Biology, Biology Education, or a biological science is required.
- ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2024; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2025 in advance of their first scheduled review.

- Demonstrated commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, a commitment to the principles of inclusivity, and serving as an active member of the university community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training drills.
- Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Full-time teaching responsibilities may include Biological Foundations, Introductory Biology I/II, Human Anatomy and Physiology I/II, and corresponding labs. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach online and/or in a hybrid format, or courses in the evenings. Faculty may also elect to teach New Student Seminars or University Learning Communities or participate in other programs geared toward improving student success.
- Research expectations include maintaining an active program of research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals, and research presentations. Grant activity is encouraged.
- Faculty members are expected to serve as academic advisors/mentors to students and to supervise undergraduate research students.
- Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations as relevant to the candidate's expertise and interest.
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
The Biology department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers Bachelor's degrees in Biology, with emphases in five areas: Cell/Physiology; Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior; Honors; Marine Biology and Freshwater Ecology; and Pre-Biomedical Professions. The Biology department has more than 400 majors and ~50 minors. We also serve the University by offering several general education courses and supporting the pre-health professions certificates in dental, medical, physician's assistant, optometry, and veterinary medicine. Our department is particularly supportive of undergraduate research with dedicated research labs for each of our faculty members, and many of our students have presented their work at national and regional meetings.
