JOB DETAILS:


Position Summary:


The Career Counselor will serve as the liaison to students enrolled in academic programs within the College of Letters & Sciences. The Career Counselor will develop relationships with faculty who teach in these disciplines, and with employers who recruit graduates of these academic programs. In addition, the Career Counselor will also coordinate the Diversity Networking Program to promote career development to underrepresented students.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the liaison to students enrolled in majors in the College of Letters & Sciences, developing an expertise and understanding of the career development needs of these students.
  2. Develop a positive, healthy relationship with faculty and academic departments in the social sciences, languages, humanities and sciences. Work with administrators and faculty in the College of Letters & Sciences to determine methods to best meet the career development needs of students. Make career related presentations to classes as needed, and work in collaborative ways to infuse career development into the classroom experience.
  3. Develop positive working relationships with all members of the Letters & Sciences Dean’s Office, and attend various meetings as invited, such as the L&S Administrative Council.
  4. Work with Letters & Sciences advisors, faculty, and administrators to promote the LSINDP 399 Career Information course. This may include teaching or co-teaching the class, and definitely includes cooperating with advisors to promote the class to students who will benefit from the course.
  5. Build relationships with employers who hire graduates in all majors within the College of Letters & Sciences. Serve as a resource for these employers, and help employers develop recruitment strategy to connect with students in the various majors as needed.
  6. Coordinate the Diversity Networking Program to provide help to underrepresented students as they prepare for their internship and job search. Work with staff in Multicultural Affairs and Student Success, Center for Students with Disabilities, Minority Business & Teacher Preparation Program, and the P.B. Poorman PRIDE Center to implement the program annually.
  7. Plan the annual Graduate School Career Fair. Work with the Undergraduate Research Program and the School of Graduate Studies to effectively plan and implement this fair.
  8. Serve as the department’s representative to the University’s Academic Advising Council, in order to build relationships with academic advisors and help bridge the academic advising services offered across campus with the career counseling function of this department.
  9. With other departmental staff, work career fairs and other career development events.
  10. Will be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.
Supervision Received:

Supervision is received from the Associate Director of Career and Leadership Development.

Minimum Qualifications:


Required:

  1. Master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership, Student Personnel Administration, Counseling, or related field. Experience (employment, assistantship, internship/field placement, etc.) working with students to meet their career development needs.
  2. Evidence of the ability to establish positive relationships with underrepresented students, and experience working with diverse populations. The ideal candidate is someone adept at creating and maintaining positive work relationships with a wide variety of students, faculty, staff, and employers.
  3. Able to work collaboratively with departmental colleagues, as well as faculty, staff, and alumni to enhance student learning.
  4. This individual must be willing and capable presenting to students about a variety of career-related topics.
Desired:
  1. Working knowledge of the various career development theories, assessment inventories, and knowledge about internships and employment in social sciences, languages, humanities, and sciences.
