ATTENTION:

The University Health & Counseling Services seeks a Senior Student Health Nurse (Registered Nurse).

JOB DETAILS:

Provides professional nursing services for the student body. Primary responsibilities include providing direct and indirect patient care. Utilizing advanced assessment skills and nursing protocols the Student Health Nurse will provide direct care for minor acute illnesses, triage appointment requests and patient presentations, oversee dispensary process, and manage Allergy and STI clinics. This position is full time, Monday through Friday during the academic year and off during the summer months and winter break.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Director of Student Health

Supervision Exercised: Functional supervision is exercised over student interns and workers in health services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • Unrestricted WI RN license
  • Current CPR
  • Minimum one year of ambulatory clinic nursing.
Desired Qualifications:
  • 5 years experience as primary nurse in ambulatory primary care setting providing direct patient care.
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion and able to work with diverse populations, including but not limited to people of all ages with various ethnic, sexual orientation, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Commitment to a flexible work schedule which may include some evenings.
  • Experience in Nursing Triage and use of protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients regarding care, treatment plans and follow up.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful, urgent situations
  • Ability to conduct patient assessments and recommend and implement appropriate plan of care
  • Ability to function independently and as a member of a team.

  • Proficiency with public speaking.
  • Ability to travel independently to attend meetings, conferences and professional development programs as needed whether on campus or otherwise.

  10. Proficient use of electronic medical records, and electronic technology.
  11. Supports the University and UHCS mission and the strategic priorities for the Division of Student Affairs.
  12. Engage in all job-related interactions and activities, with contacts from within and outside the University, in a courteous and professional manner, demonstrating the principles of civility.
  13. Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills.

DIRECT PATIENT CARE:

The Student Health Nurse will provide direct patient care nurse visits utilizing nursing assessment skills, by protocol, with support from a licensed provider, and manage the direct care for patients presenting to the Health Clinic at University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS). This may include, but is not limited to, working under protocol to manage care of patients with urinary tract infections, vaginal infections, contraceptive needs and concerns, menstrual cycle irregularities and problems, upper respiratory infections, cough, fever, travel consults, etc.
  • Interview and conduct physical assessment.
  • Recognize normal findings from abnormal, and implement the intended protocol based on findings. Follow protocol decision tree.
  • Provide advice for health care concerns based on health education brochures, electronic evidence-based resources, and standards of care.
  • When findings are beyond intent of protocol, facilitate patient into provider schedule or consult with provider.
  • Provide follow-up care as necessary, for example, make sure test results are communicated to patient.
  • Provide triage services for those patients who walk-in, telephone, or contacts UHCS electronically. Assess patient request for services.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with starting and maintaining intravenous therapy, phlebotomy, CLIA waived testing, microscopy, and other nursing skills provided in an ambulatory care clinic setting.
INDIRECT PATIENT CARE:

The Student Health Nurse will demonstrate and lead by example with advanced communication skills, problem solving abilities, conflict management and fostering a work environment that follows the principles of civility. Active listening and clarification skills are important with this patient population. Must be accountable for own communication and able to maintain positive relationships with varying types of customers (physicians, nurse practitioners, laboratory technicians, nurses, medical assistants, receptionists, schedulers, parents, student patients and other university employees). Able to resource and problem solve in effective manner. Addresses conflict and resolves issues in a professional and timely manner. Maintain required certifications/competencies, i.e., BLS, immunizations, TB testing, fit testing, etc.

The Student Health Nurse acts as a consultant and resource for the SHC and other campus programs.

Provide information regarding clinic and community resources available to students.
  • Participate in student programs and events on campus.
  • Provide evaluative data on the performance of new and/or less experienced staff. Orient new staff to the clinical area.
  • Completes one quality study annually which demonstrates quality improvement according to the AAAHC standards.
  • Follows all AAAHC standards. Makes recommendation and implements quality improvement processes.
  • Participates in Peer Review process.
  • Proficient with data analysis, assessment, and evaluation
  • Coordinates and participates in delivering flu clinics and other outreach health services as deemed necessary.
  • Reviews Nursing Protocols, policies and procedures and updates on an annual basis.
  • Participate in research studies appropriate to Student Health Center’s population.
  • Participate in social media, marketing of events and health promoting messages.
  • Coordinates annual staff education and compliance with Bloodborne pathogens, Infection prevention, immunizations and training for new staff.
  • The Student Health Nurse is accountable to develop and maintain own program of professional development.
  • Supports the mission of the university and division of student affairs strategic priorities.
  • Engages in the University goals for Inclusive Excellence
  • Proficient with utilization of electronic medical records
  • Responsible for maintaining the ordering, inventory and stocking of the dispensing formulary, ordering pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and other medications needed for clinical operations.
