ATTENTION:

The Division of Student Affairs seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Dean of Students (Dean of Students/M) for UW-Whitewater main and Rock County campuses.

JOB DETAILS:

The Dean of Students will report to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. The Dean will be a student affairs professional with deep and relevant experience who has a passion for working closely with students and a commitment to equity and inclusion. The Dean is responsible for helping to create and maintain a safe, healthy, and supportive environment to promote students’ intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and professional development in a holistic manner. The Dean of Students is the campus ombudsperson and primary student investigating officer who provides leadership within the Dean of Students Office, within the Division of Student Affairs, and within the university at-large.

The University relies on the Dean of Students to advance policies and programs aimed at positive student development and to provide urgent response and problem-solving services to students and to other staff and faculty working with students. The Dean will be a visionary and collaborative leader whose commitment to innovation and university-wide partnerships will enhance the delivery of services to all students. Moreover, the Dean is responsible for ensuring campus compliance regarding various campus, UW System, state and federal laws and regulations. This position comes with some weekend and nighttime commitments.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Social Work, Counseling, Higher Education or related field
  • Five years’ experience in student conduct administration
  • Demonstrated progressive experience directly investigating and/or adjudicating sexual misconduct cases
  • Experience in crisis management and conflict resolution
  • Experience supervising professional staff
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to cultivate environments that fosters diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Have a strong understanding of higher education institution policies
  • Demonstrated understanding of Clery, FERPA, Title IX, VAWA, and other federal and state laws/guidance
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation communication skills
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • An understanding of mental health diagnoses and how they intersect and impact student development
  • Relationship building with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and with differing abilities
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, employees, community members, and parents

RESPONSIBILITIES:


Supervision & Administrative
  1. Directs, manages, supervises and evaluates staff: University Services Program Assistant, Coordinator of Student Conduct Programs, CARE Team Case Manager, Graduate Assistant Intern, and all programs and processes the office is responsible for.
  2. Establishes, supports, and implements short and long-range department goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
  3. Responsible for developing, management and reconciliation of office budget.
  4. Performs department/program assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness and implements corrective action as required for improvement.
  5. Researches, plans, implements, supports, and assesses student development efforts with all elements of the university community and all facets of campus life.
  6. Recommends and participates in the development of university policies and procedures.
Safety, Security & Policy Implementation
  1. Directs and oversees the Students Rights and Responsibilities and the Student Code of Conduct.
  2. Effectively responds to emergency and crisis situations that pertain to students and campus life.
  3. Oversees and administer university policies and procedures (UWS17 Student Nonacademic Disciplinary Procedures and UWS18 Conduct on University Lands) for student nonacademic misconduct and (UWS14 Student Academic Disciplinary Procedures) for academic misconduct.
  4. Oversees and/or administers the investigation on allegations against University Recognized Student Organizations.
  5. Responsible for the adjudication process of student sexual misconduct cases and works closely with the Title IX Coordinator and other appropriate university personnel in the overall campus prevention and response for sexual misconduct.
  6. Represents the University to various institutional divisions as well as externally to governmental agencies, vendors, students and their families, and/or the general public.
Student and Campus Support
  1. Operates as the University’s ombuds-person by hearing, mediating, and processing general complaints and concerns by answering questions and problem-solving.
  2. Provides leadership and support for the campus CARE Team; coordinates Team and contributes to discussion and student interventions.
  3. Serves as a resource for faculty and staff for the implementation of policies and procedures for academic misconduct procedures.
  4. Provides interventions when issues of student mental illness and mental health emergencies are either apparent or referrals are received by students, faculty, or staff — taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety and well-being of the campus community.
  5. Proactively presents faculty training, support, and response for classroom management and dealing with difficult, disruptive and/or students in crisis.
  6. Assists faculty and staff with student issues and emergencies.
  7. Advocates on behalf of student voices and concerns at an administrative level.
  8. Conveys a working style that demonstrates accessibility and engagement to students.
Leadership
  1. Contributes, where applicable, to the institution’s CLERY reporting, state of Wisconsin Sexual Assault Reporting (Wisconsin Statute 36.11(22)), Biennial Review, and other needed institutional compliance responses.
  2. Builds and maintains state-wide partnerships with other college and university student conduct administrators.
  3. Prepares office annual reports; contributes to Division of Student Affairs annual report.
  4. Coordinates campus protocols for student death; processes notification procedures.
  5. Oversees the submission and processing of all requests for Medical Withdrawals; serves on committee.
  6. Conducts student records checks and relays information to hiring agencies and other schools.
  7. Participates in the overall administration of the Dean of Students Office and serves on campus committees and task forces, attending and convening staff meetings, and serving on the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Group.
  8. Provides instructor notification of student absence when a student is unable to do so themselves.
  9. Serves on relevant university planning and policy-making committees.
  10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
