ATTENTION:

The Department of Academic Advising & Exploration Center at the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater seeks an Academic Advisor (Advisor).

This is an annual position and reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon needs of the position, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

Responsibilities include advising first-year students with program planning, general course selection and registration. Other related responsibilities include monitoring progression through schedule checks, progress reports and workshops. Advisor will participate in SOAR days and Warhawk Preview/Admitted Days. The advisor may teach one section of the New Student Seminar in addition to other duties as assigned, which could include serving as coordinator of the Testing Office, Success Coaching, exploration efforts or Academic Support Center. With experience, serve as a mentor to at least one associate advisor in the AAEC. Serve as the lead liaison for one of the Colleges or Undeclared advising as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (by the start date)
  • Two years of work experience in in a higher education setting (academic advising preferred)
  • Commitment to a student-centered advising team approach with ability to work with a diverse population
  • Demonstration of excellent organizational, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Involvement on a college campus (as a professional)
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft or similar Student Information System
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Advise a cohort of 200-300 students
    1. Host Jumpstart (group advising sessions) during the first week of classes
    2. Schedule pre-advise appointments during weeks 2-5
    3. Discuss mid-term progress reports during weeks 8-9
    4. Advise during weeks 6-13 on CORE/degree/major/minor requirements to prepare students for registration
    5. Assist students with registration during weeks 13-14
  2. Utilize various student success platforms in work with students, including Navigate, PeopleSoft
  3. Participate in Warhawk Preview Days & Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) programs
  4. Schedule CareerLocker Workshops and follow-up with Exploration meetings with undeclared students to explore resources opportunities and create a major/career action plan
    1. Review CareerLocker assessments with students
  5. Assist with walk-in advising for both AAEC clientele and non-clientele by meeting face-to-face, responding to emails or answering phone calls
  6. Host academic probation meeting with at-risk students during the first week of spring
  7. Recheck schedules at the conclusion of each semester, at the completion of SOAR programs and after Advanced Placement/IB credits are uploaded in August
  8. Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
