5 Tips to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out

Written by Pilar Joseph, Career Advisor for the College of Arts & Communication and College of Integrated Studies

1. Use a headline with relevant key words to better describe who you are as a student and a professional and to make you stand out. Examples:

  • DON'T USE:  Student at UW-Whitewater
  • DO USE:    Public Relations Student at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater | PR and Social Media Intern at Wisconsin Historical Foundation, Inc. | Content Creator | Event Planner

2. Keep your profile up-to-date! Ensure you are adding your most recent and relevant experiences to your profile on a regular basis. Your profile should align with your resume and be updated anytime you gain a new skill or experience.

3. Ask your professors, mentors, supervisors, and peers to add recommendations to your profile. When asking for recommendations, be sure to share your resume, let them know what would be important for them to highlight about you in their recommendation, and let them know the types of opportunities you are seeking. Recommendations add to your credibility!

4. Make sure to include detailed descriptors under each item in your Experience section. Remember to include your position title, the name of the company/organization, and list descriptors in the form of bullet points that highlight your most relevant duties and skills.

5. Create a custom LinkedIn URL so it’s simple and looks cleaner on your resume.

a. Go to your Profile.

b. Click on the Edit (pencil) icon on the right (next to Public profile & URL).

c. Click on the Edit (pencil) icon on the right (next to Edit your custom URL).

d. Make your changes and click Save.
