FAQ's for Special and Transfer Students Interested in Secondary Social Studies Licensure

This informational document is designed to assist students in understanding the Secondary Social Studies program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. This document is not legally binding. Students should consult the course catalog, and other formal University-sponsored resources.

This depends on how much previous college or university coursework you have taken that satisfies various program requirements and whether you will enroll part-time or full-time as you are pursuing your licensure.

In general, course requirements fall into two areas:

  1. Content Programs/ OptionsRefer to the course listings within your particular social studies majors, minors, and Broadfield Social Studies programs to determine the required classes you must successfully complete to earn different social studies licenses. Ultimately, in order to be recommended for licensure, a program completer must have at least earned a major or a Broadfield (or the equivalent).  In addition, our Social Studies Licensure Program recommends licenses based on majors, minors, or Broadfields (or the equivalent). At a minimum, for additional licenses beyond the area of major or Broadfield, our social studies program recommends licensure biased on at least minor or the equivalent of a minor in a social studies discipline.)
  2. Professional Education Licensure Requirements - These are the courses that you will take as part of the UW-Whitewater's teacher education program.

If you have completed all of your general education and content area courses, the professional education program can be completed in three full time semesters (Spring or Summer, Fall, Spring).

Similar coursework from another college or university maybe substituted for equivalent UW-Whitewater courses. Please consult the University of Wisconsin System Web site for course equivalencies, transferology. In addition, please refer to the UW-Whitewater Undergraduate Catalog for course descriptions to assist you in determining whether your previous coursework is likely to be equivalent. If a one-to-one match between previous coursework and a UW-Whitewater requirement is not obvious from the course number and title listed on your transcripts, please try to obtain a course catalog description, syllabus, or other evidence of equivalency and bring this to your advising appointment with the department chair or advisor in the relevant department.

You must have your transcript evaluated by the appropriate content department chair and/or a content advisor for composition of coursework in the social studies content major(s) and minor(s) of your previous degree evaluated.  To do so, contact the department chair of the discipline(s) in which you earned significant numbers of social studies credits (area of your major and/or minor) to have your content courses evaluated. Depending on the number of major and minors you have in different social studies disciplines, you may need to have evaluations of content coursework conducted by more than one department chair or content advisor from various social studies departments.

Meet with the appropriate content department chair(s) or content advisor and ask them to verify the content courses you should complete. Bring a copy of this verification of your content advisor's approval of your content courses to your appointment with your assigned Secondary Social Studies Licensure advisor in the College of Education and Professional Studies (COEPS) and to the post-admissions meeting with the Secondary Social Studies Program Coordinator.  (NOTE: Often your content advisor or the department chair will email the Secondary Social Studies Program Coordinator [Dr. Hartwick], your assigned education advisor, and yourself a list of content courses that you may need to complete.)

Yes, but you need to be aware that this is not a night program. Although some courses may be offered evenings, some of the required courses are offered only during the day and all required field placements occur during the day.
