Inventions, Innovations and Publications: An Academic Perspective
As a STEM faculty at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI), we are expected to do well in three main areas; teaching, service and research. One measure of success in research could be in terms of peer reviewed publications or the grants received, also the inventions (patents) acquired. I will first talk about the main differences between inventions and innovations. Then I will talk about the academic meaning of “publish or perish” and some academic challenges of publishing high quality research. Finally, I will give examples from my own research with students at UWW and the inventions I have worked on, introducing the recent educational invention, “Modified Newton’s Cradle.”

Lectures will be held on Mondays at 3 p.m. in the Olm Fellowship Hall of Fairhaven Senior Services, 435 West Starin Road, Whitewater. They are open to the public. Registration is not required. Masks may be required in common areas at Fairhaven Senior Services. Please be prepared on arrival. Lectures will be recorded and posted to our website and YouTube channel. Videos of lectures in this series and in past series can be accessed for free any time after they are posted online.
