An Opportunity and a Burden: The Lives of Loyalist Women in Revolutionary Philadelphia
This lecture will explore the day to day lives of women during the occupation of Philadelphia in the midst of the American Revolution. As their husbands, sons, and brothers took up arms with British soldiers, women were left to negotiate the harsh realities of war. While some struggled to put food on the table and care for their children, others seized the opportunity to exert their own independence. These varied experiences represent the many ways in which negotiated the war at home.
