This free, virtual, bilingual workshop is for any Spanish teacher who wants to bring the exploration of gender roles and practices into their teaching and Spanish language classes. You are invited to spend an hour challenging conventional gender roles that are observed in Latin Dances. We will examine various approaches to redefine these roles, employing alternative terminology like "leader and follower" to rethink the traditional practice of “men leading” and “women following”.
By deliberately using more inclusive language and establishing a secure environment for our LGBTQ+ students, we can all be part of disrupting the prevailing concept of the "generic masculine" in Spanish. During this online workshop, we will analyze how these ideas are overtly and implicitly conveyed in Spanish language classrooms. We will also foster open and constructive dialogues surrounding themes of consent, respect, interpersonal communication, and the reevaluation of interculturality within the current landscape of Spanish world and heritage language education.
Please be ready to use Spanish, English, and Spanglish in this interactive workshop.
