The College of Business and Economics is pleased to offer an Emphasis in Nonprofit Studies. The Emphasis combines the following 3-credit courses:
- Foundations in Nonprofit and Nongovernment Organizations (MGT 370), our initial nonprofit management course introduced in Fall 2017, examines the scope and impact of this growing sector, as well as the relationship to business and public sectors;
- Public Policy Analysis and Advocacy (POLISCI 330) offers a systematic introduction to the study of public policy through an analytical problem-solving approach as well as examining other models and approaches across sectors;
- Cooperative/Internship in Management (MGT 493) is a practical internship course offered as a constructed-supervised work experience within the major area of concentration of the student. The internship experience offers the student an opportunity to merge with actual day-to-day activity in nonprofits.
Graduate Course Offering for Spring 2018: Social Transformation and Nonprofit/Nongovernmental Organization Management (MGT 765).
This graduate-level course will develop students' knowledge of the nonprofit sector. It provides an overview of nonprofit and volunteer organizations, as well as their origins, growth, and development. The course also delivers an international and comparative perspective on this emergent, multi-dimensional sector of the economy. Focuses include management theory and practice, and strategies nonprofit/nongovernmental organizations can employ to influence change at individual, policy and societal levels.

Assistant Professor Carol Brunt. Dr. Carol Brunt's major field of research is nonprofit management. Her research interests include human resource management in nonprofit organizations, knowledge transfer as a career development tool in the nonprofit sector, and patterns in nonprofit management education programs across the USA. Her academic research is published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international academic conferences. Her book, Human Resource Management in International NGOs (2016), is published by Palgrave-Macmillan (UK).
Assistant Professor Ruth Hansen. Ruth Hansen is a doctoral candidate and recipient of the Ernest R. Wood fellowship at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She is an experienced charitable fundraiser and has presented to national audiences about promoting ethics in fundraising. Ms. Hansen researches fundraising, focusing on individual fundraiser agency, communication, and socially marginalized client groups; donor behavior; and policy and regulation of nonprofits.
